Infante Juan to attend law school
April 23, 1935
Infante Juan of Spain, "heir-claimant," to the former throne of Spain, is turning away from a "zestful life at sea to the law books and university," reports the Associated Press.
The 22-year-old son, of former King Alfonso XIII of Spain, will enter Florence University in the fall as a prelude to his marriage to Princess Maria Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
Infante Juan appeared less enthusiastic about attending law school than his "life as a sailor," which he enjoyed very much.
"What a difference," he said, referring to his four years in the Royal Navy.
Friends of Infante Juan and Princess Maria, believe they will be married in October in London. King Alfonso has said that the wedding "will be a really royal affair."
The former king intends to "spare neither expense nor effort" to see that his son, the heir to the throne will have a wedding "keeping with the traditions of the Spanish royal house."
Queen Victoria Eugenia did not attend the recent weddings of her son, Don Jaime, and her daughter, Infana Beatriz, but she may attend Don Juan's nuptials.
Princess Maria, 24, is the daughter of Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, whose first wife, Mercedes, was the eldest sister of Alfonso.
