Prince Peter of Greece spoke today of his hope for the restoration of "freedom of expression" in his country when the present "emergency" ends, reports the New York Times.
Peter, 39, arrived here last week with his wife, Princess Irene, for a lecture tour. He met with the press today at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Although Prince Peter would not "discuss the internal situation in Greece in any details," while abroad, saying it would be "both unpatriotic and indiscreet."
He did say that the Greek government has taken "measures to suppress any expression of sympathy with communism," due to the "virtual civil war," which is the result of "Communist activities."
"I hope freedom of expression will be restored. It should be possible to express political opinions freely."
Prince Peter, a cousin of King Paul, is the son of Prince George and Princess Marie. He plans to spend five months on his lecture tour, and then plans to "join an anthropological expedition in Tibet."
