October 2, 1899
Princess Elisabeth of Waldeck und Pyrmont, who is the youngest sister of Queen Emma of the Netherlands, is engaged to marry Alexander, the Prince of Erbach-Schönberg, whose mother is Princess Marie of Battenberg.
The Prince is the grandson of Prince Alexander of Hesse and By Rhine and Countess Julia von Hauke, whose father was an aide to Grand Duke Constantine of Russia. Alexander's marriage was morganatic, which meant that his wife and children could not bear the grand ducal titles. The Battenbergs, despite being mere serene highnesses, have married well.
Alexander and Julie's eldest son, Louis, is married to Princess Victoria of Hesse and By Rhine and another son, Henry, who died in 1896, was the husband of Britain's Princess Beatrice.
No date for the wedding has been set, but is expected to take place next spring.
