He was 54 years old.
Don Juan Filiberto Nicolás Gómez-Acebo y Borbón was born on December 6, 1969 at the Sanatorio de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Madrid. He married Winston Holmes Carney on January 2, 2014, at the Spanish consulate in Miami, Florida. They had met when both were students at Rollins University.
The marriage was dissolved by divorce in 2019. The couple broke up due to the "incompatibility of characters," reported Vanity Fair magazine. "They had been fighting for a long time for the marriage, but in the end it was unsustainable. The incompatibility of characters was absolute."
The couple had one son, Nicolás Gomez-Acebo y Carney, born in April 2013. Don Juan remained in Miami after his divorce to be near his son, and became a permanent resident of the United States.
For the past few years, he lived in Miami with his partner, architect Teresa Verez Estenson, owner and lead designer of the Miami-based Re+Forma architectural and interior firm.
Teresa and Juan's older sister, Doña Simoneta were at his side when he died. Simoneta owns a vacation in the Sol de Mallorca neighborhood.
Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reports that Queen Sofia, who recently returned from the Paris Olympics, will visit the family before Don Juan's remains are brought to Madrid on Tuesday.
The funeral is scheduled for Thursday in Madrid. He will be buried in his family's vault at the Cementerio Sacramental de San Isidro.
Juan studied fine arts at Rollins University in Orlando, Florida. His artworks have been exhibited in Spain, Luxembourg, and other countries. His mother once said: "It's not that he's the most artistic in the family. It's that I think he's the only artist."
An artist and music producer, Don Juan preferred a life away from the spotlight, as did his brothers.
His brother, Don Fernando died in March 2024 at 49.
Don Juan is survived by his son, Nicolás, and his partner, Teresa Verez, his siblings, Doña Simoneta, Don Bruno, and Don Luis Gómez-Acebo y Borbón. His son is expected to inherit the title Viscount de la Torre.
