In 1962, Princess Marie Loise married Prince Friedrich Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe (1906-1983).

Marie Luise's father, HH Prince Albrecht Christian Adolf Karl Eugen  (1863-1948), was the 5th child of HH Friedrich, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1814- 1885).   Her paternal first cousins included Princess Viktoria Adelheid (Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha). Princess Alexandra Viktoria (Princess August Wilhelm of Prussia), Princess Helena (wife of Prince Harald of Denmark), Adelheid Luise (Princess of Solms-Baruth), and Duke Friedrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (married to Princess Marie Melita of Hohenlohe-Langeburg).   Her first cousins included members of the Coburg, Prussia, Denmark, and Solms-Baruth families.

She had three younger brothers, two of whom were killed in action during the Second World War.  Marie Luise's youngest brother, Prince Friederich Ferdinand (1913-1989) was married to Duchess Anastasia of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1922-1989).

Hertha was a descendant of George II and his wife, Caroline of Ansbach through two of their daughters, Princess Mary (Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Cassel) and Princess Louise (King Frederik V of Denmark). In 1810, Mary's son, Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Cassel (1744-1836) married Louise's daughter, Princess Louise of Denmark (1750-1831).  Their daughter, Princess Luise married Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.
