A truly noble engagement: Manners-Lindesey-Bethune

Lady Violet Manners has said yes to her "Caledonian Cowboy.  The engagement was announced on her Instagram account.


The Cowboy is  William James Lindesay-Bethune, Viscount of Garnock, Master of Lindsay, son and heir of James Randolph Lindesey-Bethune, 16th Earl of Lindsay, and his wife, Diana Mary (nee Chamberlayne-Macdonald.)  He was born on December 1990. 

Lord Garnock proposed in Colorado.

Lady Violet Diana Louise Manners is the eldest daughter of David Charles Robert, Manners, the  11th Duke of Rutland, and his wife, Emma (nee Watkins. ) She was born on August 18, 1993.

In 2017, Lady Violet and her two younger sisters, Lady Alice, and Lady Eliza were profiled in Vanity Fair magazine.  More recently, in 2023, she spoke to the Telegraph concerning what she believes is the politicizing of the National Trust.

The Duke and Duchess of Rutland separated in 2012 after the duchess discovered her husband had been unfaithful.  They live in separate wings in Belvoir Castle their partners, but have no plans to divorce.   Belvoir is pronounced Beaver.

 Lady Violet is the eldest of five children.  She also has two younger brothers, Charles, Marquess of Granby, and Lord Hugo Manners.   Her fiance is also one of five children.  He has two older sisters, Lady Frances Gabinsky and Lady Alexandra Coleman, and a younger brother and sister, Hon.David  Lindesey-Bethune and HRH The Duchess of Noto (nee Lady Charlotte Lindesey-Bethune.)  Lord and Lady Lindsay live at Lahill House in Upper Largo, Fife.

Lord Garnock is the co-founder of Feragaia, which is a "distilled alcohol-free spirit made from land and sea botanicals."

Lady Violet founded Heritage Xplore, whose mission "is to make it easy for everyone to experience Britain’s most spectacular historic houses."

He graduated from the University of Alabama in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Sales.  For several years he was based in New Braunfels, Texas, where he worked for several spirits companies.   Feragaia was founded in 2018 in Fife.

The Earldom of Lindsay was created in 1633 in the Peerage of Scotland.   In 1703, Queen Anne made the 9th Earl of Rutland Duke of Rutland, in the Peerage of England.

Lord Garnock does not use his courtesy title in his business.  He is known as Bill Garnock.

 Lady Violet's paternal grandmother, Frances Sweeny married the 10th Duke of Rutland in 1958.   Frances was the daughter of Charles Sweeny, an American golfer and socialite, and Scottish heiress Margaret Wigham, who in 1951 married the 11th Duke of Argyll.
