CROWN PRINCE ALEXANDER: ”THE WOUNDS ARE STILL HURTING”

@HRH Crown Prince Alexander

" On the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the beginning of NATO aggression on Yugoslavia in 1999, HRH Crown Prince Alexander sent his message, that the innocent victims of this madness must never be forgotten, and that the consequences of this terrible aggression are still hurting.

“Twenty-three years have passed, and our people, our country, are still not fully recovered from the terrible aggression that occurred during those tragic 78 days in 1999. The suffering of innocent people, so many lives lost and destroyed, from the terror that was imposed upon all our citizens, keeps wounds hurting and the memory of this tragedy fresh.

This was an unprecedented event of total aggression in Europe since World War Two, that was not authorized by the United Nations. Once again, regrettably, it is confirmed that violence only produces more violence and pain. And innocent people are those who always suffer the most.

The memory of this aggression needs to remain alive and fresh; we must never forget all those that tragically fell as victims of this madness. They always must be in our minds, our hearts, and our prayers. We owe it to them, but also us, so that tragedy like this can never happen again”, said HRH Crown Prince Alexander in his message."

the wedding of Countess Margherita of Arco-Zinneburg and Charles Green

Countess Margherita of Arco-Zinneburg married Charles Douglas Green on March 19 at the Asam Basilica of St Margaretha in Altenmarkt, near Deggendorf, Bavaria.

Royal Musings broke the news of their engagement in December.

https://royalmusingsblogspotcom.blogspot.com/2021/12/countess-margherita-von-und-zu-arco.html

The Roman Catholic service was officiated by Father Alessandro Prince of Bourbon-Two-Sicilies, and St. Margaretha's priest, Father Emanuel Hartmann.

Father Alessandro, a member of the Legionaries of Christ, is the son of Prince Casimir of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, and a first cousin of the bride's mother, Archduchess Maria Beatrice of Austria.   The bride's father, Count Riprand of Arco-Zinneburg died last August.

https://royalmusingsblogspotcom.blogspot.com/2021/08/death-of-count-riprand-von-und-zu-arco.html

Due to Covid concerns, the guest list was limited to about 70 people, including the bride's uncle, Prince  Lorenz of Belgium and his wife, Princess Astrid, younger sister of King Philippe of the Belgians,  Prince Napoleon, who is married to the bride's sister, Countess Olympia. Princess Adelheid of Liechtenstein and the Hereditary Princess of Leiningen.

The PNP newspaper, which reported on the wedding also wrote that members of the British nobility attended the wedding.  One can presume that these guests included two of the groom's half-sisters, the Duchess of Roxeburghe and Alice Fermor-Hesketh.

The wedding reception was held at Schloss Moos.

The couple's civil marriage took place on March 17 at the town hall in Moos.  The mayor, Alexander Sacher, officiated at this wedding.

Countess Margherita and Mr. Green, a contemporary of the Duke of Cambridge at Eton, will live in London, where they both work.

The PNP, a local German newspaper, published an article today about the wedding, with one photograph.  I have been told that the German weekly magazine, Bunte, will have a report in the next issue.

 March 17, 1902

Prince Henry of Prussia and his entourage arrived in Cherbourg, France, at 6:30 p.m. from Plymouth, England, reports the Washington Post.

The prince was seen on the Deutschland's bridge when it entered Plymouth Harbor.  He "waved a cheerful greeting" to the German naval attache, Capt. Koeper and other friends went out to "the steamship on the company's tender."

The voyage was "pleasant and uneventful," although Prince Henry was "tired out" during the first few days of the trip across the Atlantic.  He spent little time with other passengers," but during the latter part of the journey, the prince appeared often on the promenade deck and he was seen often in pleasant communication with other passengers.

After the ship docked in Cherbourg, the German consul delivered to Prince Henry "a number of telegrams and letters, including a message of welcome." from the prince's older brother, Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The Kaiser has made arrangements for a reception at Cuxhaven when Prince Henry arrives.  He said he was "greatly pleased" with the messages from the Emperor as it shows an "expression of his majesty's complete satisfaction" of Henry's visit to the United States.

Prince Henry told reporters that when he "finally boarded the Deutschland in New York," he went to his cabinet and "slept almost continuously for forty-eight hours."  He did, however, appear for his meals," and take short walks on the bridge.

He said he had never "worked so hard in his life" when he was in the United States.  He noted that he had to change his uniform several times a day, or "faced a succession of situations requiring such alertness and a certain initiative on his part."

When asked what impressed him the most, Prince Henry responded that the "great, orderly and cheerful crowds had been the most continuous impression."

Prince Henry will also be reunited with his wife, Princess Irene, and their three sons, Prince Waldemar, who turns 13 on March 20,  Prince Sigismund5,  and 2-year-old Prince Henry.

The family live in Hemmelmark, near Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein.

Will Alice become a German Empress?

March 14, 1902

Princess Alice of Albany is en route to Potsdam, according to a New York Times report.

If the latest rumors are to be believed, the 19-year-old princess, a niece of King Edward VII, is en route to Potsdam for her betrothal to Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, who is the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Should these rumors prove true,  Alice would become the Crown Princess of Germany and Prussia and the future German Empress and Queen of Prussia.

Crown Prince Wilhelm will celebrate his 20th birthday on May 6.

Princess Alice is the elder of two children of the late Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, and Princess Helen of Waldeck und Pyrmont.  Her younger brother, Prince Charles Edward, Duke of Albany, is also the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.  As he is a minor, Car Eduard, as he is known in Germany, reigns under a regency headed by the Hereditary Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, who is married to Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh, third daughter of the late Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who died in 1900, a year after his only son, Hereditary Prince Alfred.  In a family agreement, he was succeeded by his young nephew, Prince Charles Edward, who with his mother, the Duchess of Albany, moved to Germany, where he could be raised as a German sovereign.

Princess Alice, Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Hereditary Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg are first cousins, all grandchildren of Queen Victoria.

Guards for the honeymooners

March 11, 1922

Italian authorities are "taking extraordinary precautions" to make sure that the newly married Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles are not "unduly annoyed by the curious when they reach Italy," reports the Associated Press.

The honeymooners are expected to arrive by train tomorrow afternoon in Fiesole, which is three miles northeast of Florence.   But their "desire for secrecy is so great" that they  may drive from Fiesole to Pisa to avoid any crowds as they "desire to remain incognito."

Italian police will guard the Villa Medici, where the couple will stay for two weeks.

The Princess and her husband are not expected to have any visitors but "members of the British colony  have received permission to "decorate the villa with flowers and to replenish them at intervals during the visit."

Victoria Luise jilted by prince

 March 10, 1912

Kaiser Wilhelm II's only daughter, Princess Victoria Luise, is suffering from bronchitis and having a long rest in Switzerland, according to German court officials.  But the Los Angeles Times reports, based on German military sources," that the princess's absence from Berlin is "due to an affair of the heart."

The German Emperor was very supportive of a marriage between his 19-year-old daughter and Hereditary Grand Duke Adolf of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the 29-year-old son of  Grand Adolf Friedrich Vof Mecklenburgh-Strelitz and Princess Elisabeth of Anhalt.    He is the third of four children and the only surviving son.

The Hereditary Grand Duke has two older sisters, Duchess Marie, who is divorced from Count George Jametel, and Crown Princess Jutta of Montenegro.  His younger brother, Duke Karl Borwin was killed in a duel with his brother-in-law Count George in 1908.

An engagement was expected to be announced during the current social season.   Victoria Luise and the Hereditary Grand Duke were seen together  until "the last court ball."

Duke Adolf left Berlin before attending the "Ceremonial chapter of the Order of the Black Eagle."  A few days later, Princess Victoria Luise traveled to Celerina, Switzerland, to join her brother, Crown Prince Wilhelm.

She did not return to Berlin with her brother.  It is understood that the Princess was "entirely satisfied" with this arranged match, but it was Adolf  who not only "hesitated," but then made it clear that he "had no desire to marry anyone at present."

Victoria Luise is understandably devasted by the snub and her father is said to be furious.  Duke Adolf is the heir to an independent grand duchy, and can't be forced to wed the Kaiser's daughter.

Future peer to marry a German countess

Edward Charles Rolle Fane Trefusis is second in line to the Barony of Clinton, the seventh oldest barony in the peerage of England.  He is the elder son of the Hon. Charles Patrick Rolle Trefusis and Rosanna (Rosy) Izat.

Charles is the heir apparent to the Clinton barony as he is the only son of the 22nd Lord Clinton, Gerard Neville Mark Fane, later Fane Trefusis after changing his surname by Deed Poll in 1959. The name change took place two years after the death of his great-grandfather, Charles Hepburn-Stuart-Forbes-Trefusis, 21st Lord Clinton.  That same year,  Gerard married  Nicola Harriet Purdon Coote.

Edward was born on February 16, 1994.

When the 21st Lord Clinton died on July 5, 1957, the barony went into abeyance as he had only two daughters,  the Hon. Harriet Fane (1887-1958) and the Hon. Fenella Fane(1889-1966).

Harriet married in 1910 to Major Henry Neville Fane.  They were the parents of seven children, including Charles Neville Fane (1911-1940).  He was killed in action, leaving behind a widow, Gladys Lowther, a young son, Gerald (1934), and two daughters, Carol and Fiona.

It was Gerard's Aunt Fenella, who played a role in making sure her nephew inherited the peerage. In 1914, she married the Hon. John Bowes-Lyon, 2nd son of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.  John (1886-1930) was an older brother of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

It was on March 18, 1965, that Gerard received the Writ "summoning him to the House of Lords," which had been "passed under the Great Seal."  He told The Times that his Aunt Fenella had  "had let it go to me," the new Lord Clinton.  "I shall take my seat in the House of Lords as soon as it is practicable."

The new Lord Clinton was the senior male descendant through the female line of the 21st Lord Clinton.

Fenella and John were the parents of five daughters, including Anne Bowes-Lyon who married twice, first to Viscount Anson, and following their divorce, she married Prince Georg of Denmark.

A genetic defect in the Clinton family was in the family's DNA and affected male and female descendants.  The children of Harriet and Fenella were the most affected.  Three of Harriet's daughters, Idonea (1912-2002), Rosemary (1914-1972), and Ethelreda (1922-1996), and two of Fenella's daughters, Nerissa (1919-1986) and Katherine (1926-2014) were all born with severe mental disabilities.  Rosemary's twin brother, Edmund lived for only 11 months.   Fenella's first-born daughter, Patricia, was also 11 months old when she died in June 1917.

In the 1930s  Lord Clinton arranged for his five granddaughters to be placed in the Royal Earlswood Hospital in Redhill, Surrey, where the family believed the young girls would receive proper care.

H Ill H Countess Caroline Anna Amalia zu Solms-Sonnewalde is the second of three daughters of the late H Ill H Count Alfred Otto Friedrich zu Solms-Sonnewalde (1932-1922) and Christine Hüsmert (1964)   She was born in Weldam in the Netherlands on August 13, 1994.

The marriage of Count Alfred zu Solms-Sonnewalde and Christine Hüsmert, MD

Count Alfred died on February 11, 2022, at Schloss Wurschen in Weissenburg, Germany, where he and his wife and three daughters lived after the fall of communism.   He was able to reacquire the family home in 1997 and spent ten years restoring the Schloss.  They lived in an apartment on two floors.  Other rooms including the ballroom are available for rent.

The late Count's estate was divided between his three daughters.  The eldest daughter, Countess Charlotte has taken over the Dutch estate, including  Schloss Weldam, while the youngest sister, Countess Isabelle, inherited Schloss Wurschen and other German properties.

Countess Caroline is the heir to her father's properties in Scotland.

Count Alfred was the last male in the Solms-Sonnewalde line, which means this title is extinct.

Edward will eventually inherit the family seat at Heanton Satchville in Okehampton, Devon.  He has a BS in Agricultural Management and an MBA in Advanced Farm Management from the Royal Agricultural University.  He currently works as a trader at ADM Agriculture Ltd in London.

His grandfather is the largest private landowner in Devon.

The wedding will take place on May 23, 2023
