Prince Karl of Hesse (1937-2022)

 


Prince Karl Adolf Andreas of Hesse, the third of five children of the late Prince Christoph of Hesse and Princess Sophie of Greece and Denmark died on March 23 at his home in Munich, Germany.   He was 84 years old.

The prince was born in Berlin on March 26, 1937. His civil marriage to Countess Yvonne Margit Valerie Szapáry von Muraszombath, Széchysziget und Szapáry took place in The Hague on 26 March 1966.

The couple had two children, Prince Christoph (1969) and Princess Irina (1971) who in 1999 married Count Alexander von Schönburg-Glauchau.   The children were baptized in the Lutheran church.  Irina, however, joined the Roman Catholic church when she married Count Alexander.

Prince Karl was a nephew of the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

 He is survived by his wife, Yvonne, and their two children, Princess Irina and Prince Christoph, three grandchildren, Countess Maria-Letitia Jolanta (2001), Count Maximus Carolus Joachim Maria (2003), and Count Valentin Polykarp Josef Maria (2005), his brother and two sisters, Prince Rainer, and Princess Dorothea (Princess Friedrich Karl of Windisch-Graetz), Princess Clarissa and a half-brother and half-sister, Prince Georg of Hannover and Princess Frederika of Hannover Mrs. Cyr, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1967, Prince Karl joined the Duke of Edinburgh and King Constantine of the Hellenes for a hunting expedition in Alexandroupolis, Greece, where they hunted duck and wild boar.  He also attended British royal events including Princess Margaret's wedding in 1960. He and his wife attended the funeral of his grandmother, Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark in December 1969.

Prince Karl's godchildren include his niece, Helen Sophia van Eyck, who was baptized on November 6, 1963, in the King's College Hospital, Chapel.  Helen is the daughter of Karl's eldest sister, the late Princess Christina of Hesse.

  2. I saw on wikipedia (hardly reliable I know) that Princess Dorothea died in March 2002. Is there any evidence for this?

  3. If you look at that date you will notice how similar it is to her husband's date of death. Dorothea is still alive
