One of the unsung members of the Royal Family, the Duke of Gloucester celebrates his 75th birthday today.   He succeeded his father, Prince Henry, as Duke of Gloucester in 1974, nearly two years after the death of his older brother, Prince William of Gloucester, in an aviation accident.

He is married to the Danish-born Birgitte von Deurs.  They have three grown children,  Alexander, the Earl of Ulster,  Lady Rose Gilman and Lady Davina Windsor and six grandchildren.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester live in an apartment in Kensington Palace.

  1. In some of the photos he reminds me of his first cousin, king olav of Norway.

  2. Nope. Elizabeth and Richard are first cousins. Their fathers were brothers.

  3. I think Jason is referring to King Olav rather than Queen Elizabeth, which as Shamrock and Rose pointed out makes the Duke of Gloucester first cousin once removed to King Olav. Richard's grandfather George V was a brother to Olav's mother Maud.
