"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs.

The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz.

The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."

The new baby is fifth in line to the throne following his older brother, George, and older sister, Charlotte.   Princess Charlotte is the first British princess to not move down the succession for a younger brother, due to the Succession to the Crown Act (2013), which provided for succession of the eldest child, regardless of sex.

Prince Harry is now in 6th place.  The Duke of York has moved to seventh.  Only the first six in line to the throne need the Sovereign's permission to marry.   This means the Duke of York can marry without asking the Queen's permission.

  3. How wonderful that he was born on St. George’s Day! Sadly his older brother has that name, but nevertheless it is a lovely thought. Maybe he will share the name William with his father and William Shakespeare, whose birthday this is also thought to be.

    1. Ahh that is a good thought! I too thought about how George is taken. I’m thinking maybe Philip or Michael as being included but unlike when I guessed Charlotte’s name exactly, I’m not sure this time! Maybe Philip William Michael or something with those names.

    2. From the angle of the last pic he looks like big sister! Both kiddos look like their daddy, though with age I see Charlotte looking more like Mom. At her second birthday picture I saw daddy all over that sweet face! George has always looked like dad. Even now I see no resemblance between his newborn look and how he looks now, but from his baptism onward he was all dad except the shape of his face which is Grandad Middleton to me. I was hoping for another princess but it is cool that history was made regarding Charlotte retaining her spot in line.

  4. Any chance you could give some background on two names? I know Arthur is William’s second name and Charles’ third. Is there a specific person it is after or just a common name? I know Louis is for Mountbatten but don’t know if Arthur is specifically in honor of one person.

Also, any idea why George has Alexander for a middle name? Again, specific or not?

I was guessing Caroline for a girl this time as it is royal and a nod to granny as well. For a boy I’m stumped! I’d like to see Michael included though. I guessed Charlotte Elizabeth Diana last time and was spot on but this time I’m stumped! Guesses?

    1. I considered that, but they did already honor him with George so I’m not as convinced.

  6. Louis was not strictly for Lord Mountbatten. Philip's grandfather was Prince Louis of Battenberg, created Marquess of Milford Haven, whose father, Prince Alexander of Hesse and By Rhine, was the uncle of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and By Rhine, who married Princess Alice (Victoria's daughter). Louis Battenberg was a first cousin of Louis IV, who was the father of Victoria, who married her first cousin once removed. Alexander was also the name of one of Philip's nephews, killed in the 1937 air crash.

Well, there is Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable. The name came into the Royal Family in 1850 when Victoria gave birth to a son, Prince Arthur (Duke of Connaught) who was named for his godfather the Duke of Wellington. Arthur's son was Arthur as well. The Duke of Connaught was one of Queen Elizabeth's godparents. Caroline and Charlotte both come from Charles.
