Royal engaement: Austria-Brazil
August 2, 1902
Is Archduchess Elisabeth of Austria, youngest sister of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the throne, about to become engaged to a member of the Brazilian royal family? The Neues Wiener Tagblatt is said to be the "authority for the statement" that the Archduchess will shortly be betrothed to Prince Pedro de Alcantara of Brazil, grandson of the late King Pedro II.
Archduchess Elisabeth Amalia Eugenia Maria Theresia Karoline Luise Josepha was born at Reichenau on July 7, 1878. She is the youngest child of the late Archduke Karl Ludwig and his third wife, Infanta Maria Teresa of Portugal. Franz Ferdinand is the archduchess' eldest half-brother.
Prince Pedro de Alcantara is the eldest son of Princess Isabel of Brazil, and Prince Gaston de Orléans, Count d'Eu. He was born at Petropolis on October 15, 1875.
