Stephanie's deportation planned

April 19, 1941

Princess Stephanie of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst will be deported to Hungary via Siberia, according to the chief of the Immigration Service, reports the Associated Press.

"We expect no trouble with her native Hungary, where we plan to send her,"  Max Lemuel Schofield told reporters after his arrival in San Francisco.  "After all, she has a Hungarian passport, and Hungary will have to take her."

The Princess has claimed her life "would be endangered if she were deported to Hungary," because of her "anti-Nazi sentiments."  She was ordered deported after her visitor's permit had expired.

Schofield added that the Soviet Union has said it would allow her "transit over Siberia."
