In Paris today, Infanta Eulalia of Spain told the Associated Press that her nephew, the former King Alfonso XIII of Spain had given "nearly ten million dollars" to General Francisco Franco to further Franco's "insurgent cause."
"All the royal family have given their last cents to Franco," said the "aging but vigorous" Infanta. She described her nephew as "the greatest patriot that ever lived in Spain. Now they must call him back to the throne -- they must give him his reward for what he has done.
"The time, of course, is a little early for my nephew to return, with all this battling going on -- but he'll get back, don't you worry."
"Franco will put Alfonso back on the throne. I gave him all my belongings and all my property. He's got to win," she said confidently.
Alfonso's son, Infante Juan, is now living in Rome. But Infanta Eulalia did not know where Alfonso was, except to say "he's around somewhere digging up more money for Franco, I guess."
Francisco Franco has indicated that he plans to establish a military government if he is able to overthrow the present Spanish government, but later "will consider restoration of the monarchy."
