An interesting postcard


This is a new addition to my collection - the Duke and Duchess of Brunswick in conversation with the Grand Duke of Oldenburg.   The postcard was postmarked on April 3, 1916.

Grand Duke Friedrich August's eldest daughter, Sophie Charlotte, was married to Viktoria Luise's older brother, Eitel Friedrich.

    A very nice photo. The headgear is interesting - besides the Pickelhauben worn by the Grand Duke and the gentlemen in the background, the Duke of Brunswick's hat seems vaguely Indian. Some regimental headgear, perhaps? If it's fur, it certainly isn't keeping his ears warm!

    The Duchess is certainly stylish and wouldn't look out of place at a formal gathering today.
