THE ROYAL FAMILY OF SERBIA CELEBRATES PATRON SAINT DAY

Belgrade, 13 December 2022 – Solemn celebration of the Patron Saint Day of the Royal Family of Serbia - Saint Andrew the First-Called, was hosted today in the Royal Palace in Belgrade by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine. Attended by Mrs. Betty Roumeliotis, HRH Crown Princess Katherine’s sister.

His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia officiated the Holy Liturgy at the Royal Chapel dedicated to the Saint Protector of the Royal family, with the assistance of Belgrade Archdiocese priests. Following the liturgy, the traditional act of cutting the Slava cake, a traditional bread prepared for the Patron Saint Day, at the Royal Palace’s Blue Salon was also officiated by His Holiness together with the Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The church ceremony and lunch at the Palace were also attended by His Eminence Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro, Their Graces Bishops Pahomije of Vranje, Jovan of Sumadija, Ignatije of Branicevo, Andrej of Austria and Switzerland, Isihije of Valjevo, and Jerotej of Sabac, Their Graces Vicar Bishops of His Holiness: Stefan of Remesiana, Sava of Marca, Aleksej of Hvostan, Ilarion of Novo Brdo, and Dositej of Lipljan, Most Reverend Archimandrite Nektarije, main Secretary of the Holy Synod of Bishops, Most Reverend  Archimandrite Metodije, Father Superior of Holy Monastery Hilandar, with the brotherhood of the monastery.

Also, present were Dr. Vladimir Roganovic, Director of the Office for Religion of the Government of Serbia, Isak Asiel, the Rabbi of Serbia, Sead Nasufović, Reis-ul-ulema of the Islamic community of Serbia, Mustafa Jusufspahic, the Mufti of Belgrade, HE Dr. Jaroslav Javornik, Slovak Evangelistic Church, members of the Advisory Bodies of the Crown, and other friends of the Royal Family.

HRH Crown Prince Alexander thanked His Holiness and all the esteemed guests in his speech and also pointed out: “We have gathered here today in front of the holy icon, Slava cake, and the candle, to celebrate our Patron Saint Day. Patron Saint Day has always been one of the most important and holy traditions of the Serbian people. It is what kept us through the centuries. The candle that we light on the Day of our Holy Protector has always given us strength, even in the most difficult times. It was lit in the times when our people were enslaved, and in the war trenches. Its light has always shown us the way to follow and has given us courage and comfort.

The Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called is the Patron Saint of my family. We send our prayers to him to send his blessing to our home, our people, and all the people in the world. We will overcome all temptations and we will not fail our ancestors or descendants if we are united as a nation. I wish you to spend this blessed day and all the days to come in peace, prosperity, good health, and well-being”.

The present people were also addressed by His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, who said that St. Andrew was the first Apostle who followed Christ, and the Royal House is the first home in our nation. Congratulating Crown Prince Alexander the Patron Saint’s Day, he added that Patron Saint Day of the Royal family is the “slava” of our entire nation because when the head of the family celebrates, all the other members celebrate as well. And the head of the family for our entire people is the Royal House of Karadjordjevic. His Holiness added that our nation is blessed because it has its own dynasty, descended from our people. Many other nations would like to have what we have, but they would have to invent their own Royal Family, while our Royal Family is "bone of our bone, blood of our blood," sprung from a root deeply planted into the very being of our people. The Crown Prince and his ancestors came from the very core of our people, and we are therefore truly blessed, His Holiness concluded in his speech during the “slava” lunch.

Her Imperial Highness Princess Olympia Napoleon gave birth to a son, HIH Prince Louis Charles Riprand Victor Jérôme Marie Napoleon in Paris on December 7, 2022.  The Princess is married to  HIH Jean Christophe,  Prince Napoleon, the head of the Bonaparte house.

The news was announced by French journalist Frederic Natale on his Facebook page.

This is the first child - and heir apparent - for the couple who married on October 19, 2019, in Paris.

The 34-year-old Princess Olympia is the third of six daughters of the late Count Riprand of Arco-Zinneburg and HIH Archduchess Maria Beatrice of Austria.

Jean-Christophe is a descendant of Napoleon I's youngest brother, Prince Jerome, King of Westphalia (1784-1860), and his second wife Princess Catherine of Wurttemberg.   His third son Prince Napoléon-Jérôme Bonaparte (1822-1891) was named heir to Napoleon III even though he had an older half-brother, Jerome Napolean, from his father's first marriage to Elizabeth Patterson, an American.   A meeting of members of the Bonaparte family chose to exclude Prince Jerome's firstborn son from the succession.

Their eldest son, Victor (1862-1926) succeeded as the claimant to the Bonaparte cause.  He married Princess Clementine of Belgium, the youngest daughter of King Leopold II and Archduchess Marie Henriette of Austria, and they were the parents of two children, Marie Clotilde and Louis (1914-1997) who succeeded his father as head of the house.   He and his wife, Alix de Foresta had four children.

Prince Louis' eldest son, Charles (1950) whose first married Princess Beatrice of Bourbon-Two Sicilies ended in divorce, was bypassed in the succession when his father died in 1997.  The late Prince Louis chose to have his grandson,  Prince Jean Christophe, succeed him as head of the house.

German prince, 24 others arrested for plotting a coup

@DPA/Picture Alliance

In raids throughout Germany today, police arrested a group of 25 former military and far-right persons who were preparing for a "Day X" to storm German's parliament, the Reichstag, in Berlin and take power.

Heinrich XIII Prinz Reuss, 71, is among those who were arrested.  He is said to be one of two ringleaders and "central to their plans."   The other ringleader is alleged to be Rüdiger von Pescatore.

The alleged domestic terrorists included members of the Reichsbürger (Citizens of the Reich) and the QAnon movement.  The Reichsbürger group has "long been in the sights of German police, according to the BBC, due to "violent attacks and racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories."   This group does not recognize the "modern German state."

This group believes that post-war Germany is not a "sovereign country but a corporation set up by the victorious Allies," reports the New York Times.

The prince was arrested in Frankfurt-am-Main where he has a home and a business.  His life partner, a Russian citizen, identified only as Vitalia B., was arrested near their home, Jagdschloss Waidmannsheil in Bad Lobenstein.

The group's aim was to "overthrow the existing state order in Germany and to establish its own form of state, the outlines of which have already been worked out."

QAnon supporters are convinced that Germany is controlled by the "deep state," which has "secret powers pulling the political strings."

HSH Prince Heinrich XIII was born on December 4, 1951, the fifth of six children of HSH Prince Heinrich I (1910-1982) and HH Duchess Woizlawa-Feodora of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1918-2019).

News organizations have reported the prince's name as Reuss of Greiz, which is incorrect.  Greiz was the Elder Line of the former princely house of Reuss.  It became extinct in 1927 with the death of HSH Heinrich XXIV Prince Reuss zu Greiz, who renounced his throne on November 11, 1918.

Heinrich XXIV was the only son of Heinrich XII, Prince of Reuss zu Greiz, and Princess Ida of Schaumburg-Lippe. One of his sisters. Princess Hermine was the second wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

With Heinrich XXIV's death the Younger Line (Reuss zu Köstritz) became the only surviving branch of the Princely House of Reuss. The family dropped the use of the Younger Line in 1931.

The wedding of Duchess Woizlawa of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Prince Heinrich I Reuss

Prince Heinrich XIII is a collateral descendant of the Köstritz branch.  He "recounted how his great-grandfather [Heinrich XXVII] was forced to abdicate his rule when Germany became a republic."  Heinrich XIII's line of descent from Heinrich XXVII is through his mother and not his father.

Heinrich XXVII was the Prince of Reuss zu Schleiz (1858-1928), who married Princess Elise of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.   Their first child, Princess Viktoria-Feodora Reuss (1889-1918), died shortly after the birth of their daughter, Duchess Woizlawa-Feodora.

Through his mother, Woizlawa, Heinrich XIII is a great-great-great grandchild of Princess Feodora of Leiningen (Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg), who was Queen Victoria's older half-sister.

Woizlawa was a first cousin of the late Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and was one of the bridesmaids at Juliana's wedding to Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld.   Juliana and Woizlawa's fathers were brothers,  Duke Heinrich and Duke Adolf Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, respectively.  However, due to Adolf Friedrich's support for the Nazi Party,  Juliana and her family cut ties with their Mecklenburg relatives, including her cousin Woizlawa.

Viktoria-Feodora, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

It was at the WorldWeb Forum in Zurich in 2019 that Heinrich spoke out against the German republic and proclaimed that the German monarchy should be restored.  He said that his ancestors' subjects "lived happy lives because the administrative structures were straightforward and transparent." He spoke for about sixteen minutes, railing that "after thousands of years of rule," his family had been "dispossessed after the first world war.  He charged that the war was brought about by "foreign powers," and he claimed that the "driving forces" for the 20th-century wars were the Freemasons and the Rothschild banking family.

The prince has been estranged from his family for fourteen years due to his extremist beliefs.  In August 2022, a spokesman for Heinrich XIV, the head of the Princely House issued a statement after Heinrich attended a reception hosted by Bad Lobenstein's controversial mayor Thomas Weigelt, who justified the invitation by saying Heinrich XIII is a "historical person."   The spokesman said the head of the house and the Reuss family have distanced themselves from Heinrich XIII, who was described as a "distant" relative, who is a "partially confused old man" caught up in "conspiracy theory misconceptions".

Heinrich IV and Heinrich XIII are third cousins as both are great-great-grandchildren of Prince Heinrich LXIII and Princess Eleonore of Stolberg-Wernigerode.

Earlier today, Prince Heinrich XIV spoke to MDR Thüringen about his distant cousin's alleged actions have rubbed off "catastrophically" on the whole family.  He said he never imagined that Heinrich XIII would be the alleged ringleader of a terrorist group.  Thirty years ago, he was a modern businessman who "became radicalized through disappointments."

@Marianne van Dam

Heinrich XIII owns a hunting lodge in Bad Lobenstein. He worked in real estate for many years before becoming radicalized.

He married Susan Doukht Jaladi, an Iranian, in Frankfurt on August 1, 1989.  This was a morganatic marriage according to Reuss family statutes, which meant it was not recognized as equal although this status does not exist in German law as titles have ceased to exist since August 1919 and the establishment of the then Weimar Republic.  Titles are a part of one's surname.

They had two children, Elena (1989) and Heinrich XXVIII (1991) before the marriage was dissolved by divorce.  Susan calls herself Princess Susan Reuss.  She is a "certified alternative practitioner with numerous additional training for special treatment methods."   According to Susan's personal website, her daughter, Elena, has Down Syndrome.

The other alleged ringleader Rüdiger von Pescatore was also arrested today.  He is a 69-year-old retired army officer who was described as the terrorist group's "military leader.  He served as commander of paratrooper battalion 251 and was "reportedly" expelled from the German military over the "unauthorized sale of weapons from the stocks of the old East Germany military."

Von Pescatore was born in Munich on July 25, 1953, the son of Bonaventura von Pescatore and Traute Christel Plep.  In 1979 he married Karin Fröhlich.

He is a great-great-grandson of Max Heinrich, Count of  Wuthenau-Hohenthurm and Countess Pauline von Württemberg.

The Sacrament of Christening in the Christian Orthodox tradition takes place 40 days after the child is born. December 6th is the day of Saint Alexander Nevsky, an important figure in the Orthodox faith and Russian history.

HSH PRINCE ALEXANDER GEORGIEVICH ROMANOFF

HSH Prince Alexander Georgievich Romanov was born in Moscow on October 21st, 2022.

The first member of the Romanov dynasty to be born in Russia after the October Revolution, he is also the first member of the Romanov Imperial Family to receive the Sacrament of Christening on Russian soil.

HSH is born in the hospital ZKB at 10:32 and weighed 2,7kg.

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR

HSH Prince Alexander Georgievich will be Christened in Moscow in the Church of Christ the Saviour.

The Church had been completely destroyed and turned into a public swimming pool during the times of the USSR.  Between the years 1995 to 2000, it was rebuilt. Today the Church is the seat of the Patriarchate of Moscow (equivalent to Saint Peter's church in the Vatican for Catholics).

The Cathedral was the venue for the Canonization of the Romanovs when the last Tsar Nicholas II and his family were glorified as saints upon the request introduced by HIH Grand Duchess Maria as the Head of the Family.

Around 400 international guests will attend the ceremony.

THE CHRISTENING DRESS

For this event, the Christening dress of the baby is a lace-patterned family dress. This dress belongs to the Romanov family for over two centuries and has been used by other members of the Imperial House.

THE DRESS OF HSH PRINCESS VICTORIA ROMANOVNA ROMANOFF

The dress has been crafted especially for the occasion by Russian designer Elina Samarina who runs the brand Sergio Marcone in Moscow and who also had realised parts of the wedding dress of Princess Victoria.

THE CAKE

The cake has been created especially by the chef Michael Lewis-Anderson who also designed the cake of Grand Duke George and Princess Victoria’s wedding. The recipe of the cake is the “Victoria Romanovna” which has been created especially for the wedding by the Chef and the bride.

A blend of Russian buttercream and orange blossom water combines Russian and Italian traditions in honour of the bride. The cake is made in traditional royal icing style recreating details of the Romanov family such as the gryphon.

“The Victoria Romanovna cake became a part of a historic event: the first Romanov wedding to be held in Russia for the first time after the Revolution. Now it becomes part of another historical event: the Christening of our son Alexander Georgievich who is the first member of the Romanov dynasty to be born in Russia after 1917. Thanks to the incredible talent of Chef Michael Lewis Anderson, both occasions were enhanced by the elegance and refinement of the cake’s taste and design.

We are pleased that this family tradition represents a worldwide message of peace and harmony”. Princess Victoria Romanovna stated.

PROGRAMME

The Sacrament of Christening will start at 13:00h Moscow time and will end 60 minutes later and will be followed by a reception on the premises of the Church.

After the completion of the Sacrament, the Imperial Family will be presented with icons of the Holy Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky. The first one contains the relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky specially brought for the occasion from Saint Petersburg by Archpriest Alexander Tkachenko, upon request of His Eminence Metropolitan Varsanofi of Saint Petersburg and Ladoga -who also celebrated the wedding of Grand Duke George and Princess Victoria last yearThe second icon was a gift from holders of the Russian Imperial and Royal Orders.

A NOTE FROM GRAND DUKE GEORGE AND PRINCESS VICTORIA

"It is for us a joyful occasion to be able to celebrate this Christening in Russia. Our son Alexander is the first member of the Family to be born in our country since we were allowed back into Russia in 1991. For our Family, this represents a historic event as well as the continuation of our dynasty and of the history of Russia” said Grand Duke George

WHAT THE FAMILY DOES TODAY

Splitting their time in between Russia and Brussels, Grand Duke George and Princess Victoria run two foundations.

The Russian Imperial Foundation helps mostly children affected by incurable diseases and autism. And FoodbankRus, today’s largest Foodbank in Russia, celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. The Imperial Foundation also financed last year a short film to rise awareness of autism that won the best children's movie at the Moscow film festival 2022.

Foodbank Rus helps over 1,5 million families each year thanks to 10.000 volunteers, countless national and international donors, and 52 regional offices.

FoodbankRus is a member of the Foodbank European Association FEBA, as well as the UN’s FAO Food and Agriculture Organisation.

“Today our Family continues its long-lasting mission of helping those in need. Princess Victoria and I are convinced that putting our legacy to aid the ones in need is the best way to uphold the values of our Family” Grand Duke George said.

Estelle Manville marries Folke Bernadotte

December 1, 1928

Miss Estelle Romaine Manville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Edward Manville, was married today to Count Folke Bernadotte of Wisborg, a nephew of King Gustaf V of Sweden. This was "one of the most brilliant society gatherings in recent years," according to the New York Times. The couple was married in the "small, ivy-covered Episcopal Church of St. John in Pleasantville, New York.
The church's interior "sparkled as decorations, jewels, and dress uniforms flashed in the light of hundreds of candles."

All modern lighting was shut off for the ceremony, and "red candles in sconces cast a soft glow over the scene."
A reception at the Manvilles' country home, Hi-Esmarco, where 1000 guests awaited the bride and groom. Only 250 guests attended the wedding service.
More than 2000 people, many of whom had known Miss Manville since childhood, stood outside the church and lined the mile-and-a-quarter route between Hi-Esmarco and the church.

Count Folke's wedding present to his bride was a diamond tiara, which she wore on top of the veil. King Gustav's gift was a large diamond and pearl brooch.

The wedding took place at 4 p.m. when the guests were all in their seats and the wedding party arrived.

Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden was Count Folke's best man.

Lohengrin's wedding march was sung by two choirs as the bride was escorted down the aisle by her father. It was a single-ring ceremony, and the word "obey" was omitted from the service.

The bride wore a princess gown "of ivory-colored transparent velvet, having a long fish-train train with a panel down the center of wide Venetian point lace," which had been in the bride's family for years. The train part of the skirt was bordered with seed pearls.

Instead of a wreath of orange blossoms, the bride wore a nine-pointed coronet of diamonds, which was made by the Swedish court jeweler. Estelle will wear this coronet when presented to the Swedish court in January.

The "superb veil of old Brussels lace, mellowed with age to a deep ivory color," belonged to Count Folke, who inherited it from his grandmother, Queen Sophia. The bride carried a sheaf of calla lilies tied with a silk ribbon, and she wore a diamond and pearl pendant.

The Count and Countess will spend their honeymoon in the United States. Tomorrow they will be in Washington attending a White House luncheon hosted by President and Mrs. Coolidge. Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf and other members of the Swedish royal family will also be present.  Christmas will be spent at Hi-Esmarco, and then the Count and Countess will go to Stockholm, where they will live.
