Victoria said to be in good health

 September 9, 1899

Queen Victoria is said to be in good health as she is "making an assiduous round of her old retainers" at Balmoral, according to a special cable to the Chicago Daily Tribune.

The 80-year-old queen's health is said to be "admirable."  Her advice has been sought for the new book, The Life of Lord Beaconsfield, a study of the late "great statesman," which is nearly finished.  Boxes of  correspondence have been brought to the Queen, which has had each "document read aloud to her."

The Princess of Wales and Princess Victoria have arrived in Bernstoff, ear Copenhagen, with the Princess' of Wales' father, King Christian IX of Denmark.  The King;'s second daughter, the Dowager Empress of Russia, and all of her family, except for her elder son, Nicholas, have already arrived at Bernstoff.

The Princess of Wales is expected to stay in Denmark for about two months. She will return to England in late October and will travel to Sandringham, where she will remain for the winter.

There will be a revolt if Charlotte dies

United Press is reporting that the "sudden illness of the beautiful young Princess Charlotte", the daughter of Prince Louis II of Monaco, has caused "suspension of the negotiations which she was conducting in behalf of her father with the dissatisfied citizens " of the small principality.

The Princess, who is the heiress apparent to the throne, is seriously ill and may die.   Her death could lead to a "revolt which has been smoldering against the Prince" for more than a year and would "blaze up immediately."

Monaco's citizens are demanding a new Constitution and a committee of "themselves with power to supervise" the expenditure and income of the casino.

Prince Louis II is opposed to this demand because it would mean that his subjects would have "supervision over a considerable part of his income."

After his most recent refusal of their demands, Monegasques "delivered an ultimatum" that they would "seek influence" with French groups to annul the Franco-Monaco treaty, which allows Monaco's casino to offer roulette, which is not permitted in France's casinos.

A son for Amedeo and Elisabetta

Embed from Getty Images

Princess Elisabetta of Belgium gave birth to her second child, a son, who was born Friday evening (September 6) at 9:05 p.m., at the UMC Sint-Pieter Hospital in Brussels.

The princess is the wife of Prince Amedeo of Belgium, the eldest child of Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz of Belgium.

Prince Amadeo married Italian-born Elisabetta Rosboch von Wolkenstein on July 5, 2014.  Their first child, a daughter, Archduchess Anna Astrid, was born on May 17, 2016 at UMC-Sint-Pieter Hospital.

The name of the new baby, the second grandchild for Princess Astrid, has not been announced, but due to a 2015 decree from King Philippe, Amedeo's children will not have Belgian titles. The decree limits the HRH and title of Prince or Princess of Belgium to the children of the sovereign and the children of the heir or heiress apparent.

Embed from Getty Images

Amedeo's father was born Archduke Lorentz of Austria.  On November 19, 1995, King Albert II issued a decree that extended the HRH and title of Prince or Princess of Belgium to Princess Astrid's children.  The new gender equal succession law  (1991), which superseded the Salic law (males only) allowed for Princess  Astrid and her children to be inserted in the line of succession after her elder brother, Philippe, and before her younger brother, Prince Laurent.  As Philippe was not married in 1995,  it seemed possible that he would not marry and the succession would eventually devolve on Princess Astrid.

King Philippe married Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz in December 1999.  They have four children.

The new archduke is eight in the line of succession to Belgian throne.  He is the second great-grandchild of King Albert and Queen Paola.

Charlotte of Monaco "moves to avert republic"

Embed from Getty Images

 September 6, 1929

Princess Charlotte of Monaco has intervened between her father, Prince Louis, "and his subjects who are threatening to revolt and proclaim a republic next month," reports the New York Times.

The Princess is in Monaco "not as an emissary bit in an independent effort to bring about a settlement."  She listened to the complains and "amid cheers of the population," she left Monte Carlo with a promise to "secure redress for the grievances of the little principality."

She conferred for several hours with Monte Carlo's mayor and other government officials.  The mayor, Eugene Marquet, made it clear to the princess that the citizens of Monaco "were serious in their intent to revolt if their claims were not satisfied with another month."

The mayor was adamant that Monaco would become a republic under a French protectorate and the "princely authority" would be ended by a vote in Parliament.

The primary issue centers on the management of the Casino in Monte Carlo and its revenues.   Monaco's citizens are demanding that the Casino's management board be exclusively to the country's residents.   They are also demanding full transparency from the government to the Casino's earnings.

They also want the government to "immediately install public water, gas and electricity services" throughout the city.  At this time, the public services are limited to a small area that includes hotels and the shops.

Princess Charlotte made it clear that she was not "authorized to make a promise," but she insisted that a "satisfactory agreement" would be reached.  After she left the palace, where a small crowd had gathered to cheer as she left for the station.  She left for Marseilles and was expected to meet with Prince Louis to further discuss the situation.

    Embed from Getty Images

The Princess, who will celebrate her 31st birthday on September 30, is the heiress to the Monegasque throne.  She is the natural daughter of Prince Louis and Marie Juliette Louvet, a singer.  Prince Louis has no legitimate issue.  In order to avoid a possible succession crisis as the next legitimate heir, Prince Wilhelm, 2nd Duke of Urach, was German.  The Duke, the son of Princess Florestine of Monaco, was born and raised in the principality, but was a German citizen.

Charlotte was recognized as Louis's daughter on May 15, 1911 and recognized as as a dynast.   Seven year later, on October 30, 1918,  Charlotte was adopted into the family, as the 1911 law was considered invalid under the family statues (1882.)

Prince Louis officially adopted Charlotte on May 16, 1919. She became a Grimaldi and she received the title, Duchess of Valentinois, which acknowledged her position as second in line to the throne.  Prince Louis succeeded his father, Prince Albert in 1922, thus moving Charlotte into the position as Hereditary Princess.

In 1920,  Prince Louis arranged for Charlotte to marry Count Pierre de Polignac.  Prince Albert issued an ordinance allowing for the Count to have the surname Grimaldi and the title Prince of Monaco.    The couple have two young children: Princess Antoinette, 8, and six-year-old Prince Rainier.

Ernst August of Hanover to take son to court

    Embed from Getty Images

Prince Ernst August of Hanover, 65, will be taking his elder son, Prince Ernst of Hanover to court in two to four weeks, reported FAZ on August 30.

Prince Ernst August wants to regain his German properties that were legally turned over to his son in 2004..  He is not happy with the younger Ernst August's agreement with the government of Lower Saxony regarding Schloss Marienburg.

At the beginning of 2020,  the younger Prince Ernst August will transfer the Schloss to a charitable foundation for one Euro.     The Lower Saxony government had previously dropped out of a plan to purchase the Schloss.   Papa had been opposed to this plan.

    Embed from Getty Images

Now he is also against the new foundation plan which Culture Minister Björn Thümler had negotiated after the first plan had failed.

Hereditary Prince Ernst August told FAZ that his father does not have a right to a reversal of the donation.  "That's done.  The topic is finished for me."

The state considers the senior Prince Ernst August to be irrelevant.  To ensure the legal transfer of Schloss Marienburg to a charitable foundation, an evaluation report was drawn up a few months ago.  Despite being a tourist site, Schloss Marienburg is considered worthless in its present state.

Prince Ernst August wants to prevent Schloss Marienburg's transfer to the foundation. He has complained that his son  nor the government have not informed him about the plans for Schloss Marienburg.

The Lower Saxony government, however, does not consider the senior Ernst August to be a reliable person.

The office for the Welfen properties is in Gmunden, Austria.  In 2012, Papa was forced out from the administration of the family estates.

Princess Royal and Queen of Portugal working together to unite children

    Embed from Getty Images

    September 4, 1909

The Princess Royal and Queen Amelia of Portugal are said to be "moving heaven and earth" to unite their children, Princess Alexandra of Fife and King Manoel of Portugal of marriage, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A report in a Portuguese newspaper a few weeks ago that announced an engagement between the young king and King Edward VII's eldest granddaughter was "officially denied" by Buckingham Palace.  The announcement may have been a premature, but it is understood that the two royal mothers area determined to bring about an engagement.  It may even be possible to "overcome the objections" of Alexandra's Protestant traditions.  Portugal is "intensely  devoted to the Roman Catholic faith.

Portugal's ambassador to the United Kingdom is a close friend of King Manoel's.  He thinks that the king is a "fine fellow, who, even if he has a shaky throne, can be trusted to make the best of any situation in which he may be placed, and to make the Portuguese monarchy secure and popular if anyone can."

King Manoel is said to be fond of Princess Alexandra.  But he knows that there are difficulties with such a marriage, and he does not want to give "any offense" to his subjects.

King Edward has invited the king to come to England, where the marriage will be discussed.  Although the exact date for the visit has not been determined, it is understood that King Manoel has accepted the invitation.

    Embed from Getty Images

This visit will allow the "young people" to meet and get to know each other other better.  It is hoped that they will "add personal inclination to the other forces that are at work to unite them."

Alexandra's father, the Duke of Fife is a very wealthy man, who would "no doubt make a generous provision to enable his daughter to  maintain the position she would be called to."  King Manoel  is described as poor. Earlier this year, he chose to forgo apart of his state allowance until "all of the money illegally withdrawn by his father is repaid."

It s also understood that the engagement will not be announced until Manoel is "satisfied from a report from his own court physician" that Princess Alexandra is "fitted to become the mother of princes."

She is said to be a "buxom, hearty girl," so there should be little concern about her ability to bear children.

If this "difficulties are overcome," Alexandra will find that she will have as "good a husband as a royal bride can expect."  King Manoel, who will celebrate his 20th birthday in November,  succeeded to the throne on February 1, 1908, after the assassinations of his father King Carlos I, and his older brother Prince Luis Filipe.

Princess Alexandra is eighteen years old.

If this marriage can be arranged,  it will bring to end the possibility of an American queen in Portugal.   Anita Rhinelander Stewart recently became engaged to Prince Miguel, a pretender to the Portuguese throne.  But if King Manoel marries an English princess,  it is unlikely that there will be challengers to his throne.

    @HRH Crown Prince Alexander

After his baptism on 21 October 1923, the young Crown Prince received his first sabre from the Russian Cossack Atamans. On its steel blade there is an inscription: “To the Heir to the Throne of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes on the day of His Baptism 21 October 1923”, and on the other side of the blade: “From the Don, Cuban and Teran military Atamans and Cossacks.
A portrait of His Majesty King Peter II by Paja Jovanovic, which is kept at Oplenac in the House of His Majesty King Peter I is one of the exhibits at this unique exhibition.

Also, there are photographs of his everyday life activities – studying or doing his hobbies – acting, sports, or dancing. As a young man, my father had different interests that people today know very little about. I hope this exhibition will bring him closer to today’s generations of young people”.

Queen Helen to be reburied in Romania

    Embed from Getty Images

It was the late King Michael's greatest wish to have his mother's remains brought back to Romania for reburial.

The Romanian royal family has been working with official in the Vaud canton to for the return of Queen Helen's remains.

Queen Helen died at Lausanne, Switzerland, on November 28, 1982.  She was buried at the Bois-de-Vaux cemetery in Lausanne.

A national funeral will take place on October 19 at the Cathedral at the Curtea des Arges, where she will be reburied.

According to a release from the royal house,  the remains of Queen Helen will arrive at  Henri Coanda-Otopeni International Airport on October 18.

Princess Helen of Greece and Denmark was born at Athens on May 2, 1896, the third of six children, and eldest daughter of King Constantine I and Queen Sophie of the Hellenes.

    Embed from Getty Images

She met Crown Prince Carol, the eldest son of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, in Switzerland, where she and her family were living in exile.   Queen Marie and Queen Sophie were first cousins, granddaughters of Queen Victoria.

King Constantine gave his assent to the engagement only after Carol's first marriage to Romanian commoner Zizi Lambrino was annulled.  The engagement was announced in November 1920.

    Embed from Getty Images

The marriage took place in Athens on March 10, 1921.  Helen was the first princess to marry in Greece.

Helen gave birth to her only child, Michael, less than eight months after the wedding.

Within three years of the marriage, Carol had abandoned his wife for another woman, Elena Lupescu.  This had not been the first time that Carol had been unfaithful to Helen, but this time, the relationship was serious and Carol was determined to live with Elena.  On December 28, 1925, he renounced his position as Crown Prince and his right to the throne.

    Embed from Getty Images

The marriage was dissolved on June 21, 1928, nearly a year after King Ferdinand died and five-year-old Michael succeeded to the throne.   In 1930, Carol returned to Romania and claimed his throne.  Michael was demoted to Crown Prince.

The relationship between Carol and Helen was divisive and difficult, fraught with tension for Helen, who was determined to maintain contact with her son. It was only after Carol was forced to leave Romania in September 1940 and Michael, now 18, back as king that Helen returned to Romania.

Romania's fascist dictator Ion Antonescu  bestowed the title Queen Mother of Romania.   By 1944, Romanian communists, aided by the Soviet Union, were making inroads into Romania's political system.  Michael had single highhandedly  overthrown the Antonescu regime, throwing the country's support with the Allied Nations.  Unfortunately, this mean that Soviets could make their move to add Romania to their list of countries that they would control after the war.

It was on December 30, 1947 at the Elisabetha Palace in Bucharest that King Michael, at gunpoint, was forced to abdicate.  The Romanian Peoples' Republic was established within hours of the announcement of Michael's abdication .  He and Queen Helen left Romania on January 3 and settled in Switzerland.

After her son's marriage to Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma in June 1948, Queen Helen left Switzerland and settled in Villa Sparta in Fiesole, Italy, a house that belonged to her mother, which Helen bought after her death in 1932.

Queen Helen remained at Villa Sparta until 1979, when she moved back to Switzerland, living first in an apartment in Lausanne, and then, in 1981, moving in with her son and his family at their home in Verosix.

    Embed from Getty Images

The plan to rebury Queen Helen has been in the works since January 2018, when the Romanian royal family announced that the remains of King Carol II would be moved to Curtea des Arges as well as the remains of Queen Helen, would be moved to the new Archdiocesan and Royal Cathedral.

    Princess Ingrid Alexandra confirmed

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, 2nd in line  to the Norwegian throne, was confirmed in the Lutheran Church earlier today. She is the eldest of two children of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette Marit.  The Confirmation Service, which in the Lutheran church is a reaffirmation of one's baptism - and rite of Passage -- took place in the castle's chapel.  Princess Ingrid's father, grandfather and great-grandfather, King Olav V, were confirmed.

The princess' baptism took place in the Palace chapel on April 17, 2004.  Two of her godparents,  Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and King Felipe VI of Spain, then the Prince of Asturias, were preparing for their weddings.

One of the unsung members of the Royal Family, the Duke of Gloucester celebrates his 75th birthday today.   He succeeded his father, Prince Henry, as Duke of Gloucester in 1974, nearly two years after the death of his older brother, Prince William of Gloucester, in an aviation accident.

He is married to the Danish-born Birgitte von Deurs.  They have three grown children,  Alexander, the Earl of Ulster,  Lady Rose Gilman and Lady Davina Windsor and six grandchildren.
