It should be noted that the late Prince was third in line to the Brazilian throne, not fourth.

The second article is in English.

The prince was not the guest of a duke. Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg is his great-uncle.

Today is the 56th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation. My parents were on their honeymoon in Virginia, as my dad was in the US Navy and stationed in Norfolk. My parents eloped -- sort of - but it is not as if mom and dad ran off to a justice of the peace. They got married at a Lutheran church in Silver Spring, Maryland, and then went on their Virginia honeymoon. You might wonder where I got this interest in royalty. Many years after the honeymoon, my mom told me nothing happened during the honeymoon because she wanted to watch the Coronation on TV -- my dad had only a few days leave and, drat! the leave coincided with the Coronation. When I was all grown up, I asked my dad about this, telling him what mom told me years before ... he just rolled his eyes, smiled, and said grwww rrww! The real honeymoon was during the next leave ... I will let you figure that out as I was born 12.5 months after my parents' wedding!

Prince Pedro Luiz of Orleans-Braganza dead at 26

(The copyright for this photo belongs to Eric van deVloete).

Prince Pedro Luiz of Orleans-Braganza, 26, was on board Air France Flight 447, bound from Rio to Paris, that apparently crashed into the Atlantic in the late hours of May 31.

Prince Pedro Luíz Maria José Miguel Rafael Gabriel Gonzaga was born at Rio de Janeiro on January 12, 1983, the eldest son of Prince Antonio and his wife, the former Princess Christine de Ligne. This marriage was considered equal, Princess Christine is the daughter of Princess Alix of Luxembourg. He was third in line in the succession to the former Brazilian throne, after his uncles Luiz, who is the head of the house, Bertrand, and his father, Antonio.

The prince, who worked for BNP-Paribas, a bank in Luxembourg, was returning there after spending some time with his family in Sao Paulo.
"He came to visit his family, and now he is missing," said Pedro's uncle, Dom Francisco de Orleans-Braganca.

The head of the Brazilian royal family is Pedro's uncle, Luiz Gastao, who was born in 1938. Dom Luiz Gastao is unmarried, as Dom Bertrand, his brother, who is the heir apparent, although it is understood that the succession would eventually devolve on Dom Antonio, and his family.

Dom Pedro is survived by his parents, and his three siblings, Amelia, Rafael and Maria Gabriela.

The prince's cousin, Princess Alix de Ligne, was also planning to take that flight, but decided to leave on a later flight to Paris. Alix and Pedro are actually double cousins as Princess Alix's father, Michel, the Prince of Ligne, is married to Princess Leonor (Eleonore) of Orleans-Braganca, whose brother, Dom Antonio, is married to Michel's sister, Princess Christine.

On Monday, the family confirmed that Prince Pedro Luis was on the flight. Brazil's defense minister confirmed on Tuesday that the plane had crashed into the Atlantic as the wreckage found in the area has been determined to be from the Air France flight. There were no survivors.

Hitler tells Paul Yugoslav border is safe

Both images are from the Marlene A Eilers Koenig Collection

June 1, 1939

At a gala dinner honoring the Prince Regent of Yugoslavia and his wife, Princess Olga, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler "guaranteed Yugoslavia's borders" during an exchange of toasts.

The Chancellor is entertaining his guests "royally" during the five-day State Visit. He said, "We see a happy occasion for a frank and friendly exchange of views that I am convinced can bring only benefits to our peoples and States. Hitler stressed the importance of friendship between Germany and Yugoslavia. "I believe in this all the more since a solidly founded and trustful relationship of Germany toward Yugoslavia -- now that through historic events e have become neighbors with common borders established for all time -- will not only secure a permanent peace between our two peoples and countries but beyond that will provide an element of calm for our jittery continent."

Prince Paul noted Herr Hitler's respect for Yugoslavia's border with the Reich. "My visit is a demonstration of the determined will of the Yugoslav people to live and work together with the German people in an atmosphere of peace and friendship. For that reason, I am very happy that once more in the words of your Excellency are found solemnly expressed assurances that the great German Reich also desires the establishment and strengthening of friendly cooperation with Yugoslavia in that it intends to recognize her freedom and independence, as well as the same frontiers that have joined us as last neighbors since last year."

According to the New York Times, Prince Paul is the first royal head of state to visit "Greater Germany." Prince Paul and Princess Olga "arrived in Berlin this afternoon and were received with all the honors due their rank and all the pomp that has become characteristic of the National Socialist regime."
Herr Hitler, who was accompanied by Field Marshall Hermann Goering, Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, and other ministers in his government, and "surrounded by a vast military display," greeted his royal visitors at the Lehtre station. Frau von Goering, "acting as first lady of the land," presented Princess Olga with a bouquet of flowers.

The couple was taken to Bellevue Palace, the Third Reich's official guest house.

Prince Paul is one of three regents for King Peter II, 15, who succeeded to the throne in 1934 following the assassination of his father, King Alexander. The regency will end on September 6, 1941, King Peter's 18th birthday.

Danish king's brother has died

June 1, 1903

The Court of Denmark has gone into mourning due to the death of Prince Julius of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, the younger brother of King Christian IX of Denmark. Prince Julius died tonight at Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein. He was born at Gottorp in 1824 and was the eighth child of Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Luise of Hesse-Cassel.

Prince Julius was 78 years old.

In 1883, Prince Julius, six years younger than his brother, King Christian, contracted a morganatic marriage with Elisabeth von Ziegesar, who was created Countess von Roest by the Danish king. The Countess died at the age of 31 in 1887.

Prince Julius did not have any children. He is survived by two brothers, King Christian IX of Denmark and Prince Johann of Schleswig-Holstein, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Duke Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Queen Alexandra of Great Britain, the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia, King George I of the Hellenes, and the Duchess of Cumberland.

New princess for Italy

June 1, 1901

Queen Elena of Italy gave birth to her first child, a daughter, this morning in Rome. Princess Yolanda Margherita was born at 9 a.m., and "mother and infant are progressing favorably," according to the Chicago Daily Tribune. Although he would have wished for a son, King Victor Emmanuel expressed "contentment" with the baby's sex.

Only males can succeed to the throne in Italy.

Salutes are being fired throughout the country, and flags are flying from the palace and public buildings in honor of Yolanda's birth.

The new princess's nurse will have a liberal pay package, including a pension. She will receive $2000 when the infant gets her first tooth, another $2000 when she says her first word, and a further $2000 when the princess can walk unsupported.

Although Elena is said to be the most beautiful queen in Europe, she is not popular in Italy because she has not given birth to a male heir.

Prince Harry admits he cannot do math!

Prince Harry and I have something in common. He's not good at maths and I am not good at math. Just so you are not confused, Brits say maths, and the American term is math.

Another birthday

Today - June 1 - Edison celebrates his 12th birthday. In October 1998, my husband and I were walking to Thomas Edison High School to buy our Halloween pumpkin, when Bill spotted a rather emaciated cat coming in and out of a storm drain. I ran back home to get a can of cat food. The food was left by the drain, and soon enough, the cat emerged again, and scarfed down the meal. For the next two weeks, Bill and I returned every day to the drain. We brought a crowbar, and I figured out how to open the drain cover. The highs school has a veterinary program, and we spoke to the teacher. Students tried to trap the cat, to no avail. Finally, after two weeks of coming every evening with food, Bill and I were able to trap the cat. We brought the cat home, locked put in him in the bathroom so he would not have any contact with the other cats ... just in case, he had a disease. The next morning, we took him to the vet, where we left him for a checkup. The vet called later in the morning to say that the cat had only minor issues, such as roundworm, all of which were easily treatable. He was all skin and bones, and the vet thought he was about 18 months. The vet told us we had a little sweetheart. Bill and I looked at each other and said: snip him. In other words, we were going to add to the family again. Louis, my Maine Coon, didn't care. He was the alpha cat, and Mommy's boy. My sensitive Buddy was another matter, and Edison, the name we gave our kitty, was a survivor cat. He traumatized Buddy. In fact, Buddy would not get off our bed for several months. We had to close the door so he would get off to use the litter box. If I picked him up, and carried him out into the hall, he would scream. It was horrible. We nearly got rid of Edison, but I knew that Edison would eventually calm down, and Buddy would be more accepting. One spring morning, Buddy got off the bed, walked into the hall, looked around, and went back on the bed. The next morning, Buddy got off the bed, ran downstairs, looked for Edison, and gave him the third paw!
Edison is much more mellow now -- and no longer skin and bones. At one time, he soared to over 20lbs. Big boned! He has lost some weight, but, unfortunately, cats cannot do crunchies to regain the flat tummy. Edison, who is also known as Edison James Kittycat, is mellow, loves to drink from the spigot, is very quiet, shy, and loves his little sister, Sienna. Edison and Buddy made their peace a long time ago, and Edison tries to protect Buddy from the the diva, Ella.
