Count of Paris' daughter baptised

The infant daughter of the Count and Countess of Paris was baptised today "in an elaborate service at the Manoir d'Anjou." The princess was given the names Helene Astrid Leopoldine, and her sponsors are the Belgian sovereigns, King Leopold III and Queen Astrid.
The Count of Paris is the pretender to the French throne.
Elaborate security was put in place for the baptism.
Family members stood to the right of the altar, and includes the Countess of Paris' parents, Prince and Princess Pierre of Orleans and Braganza and her brothers, Pierre and Jean, and sisters, Marie-Francoise and Therese and the Prince and Princess Murat.

Boris receives dispensation to marry Giovanna

The Vatican announced today that the Pope has agreed to the marriage between Princess Giovanna of Savoy and the Orthodox Bulgarian king, Boris III. Both the bride and groom have to provide a "written declaration promising to baptize and educate their children, without exception, in the Catholic religion."
Boris's father, King Ferdinand, was excommunicated by the Roman Catholic church after he had Boris re-baptised, according to rites of the Orthodox church. This caused great concern and unhappiness for Boris' mother, the devout Princess Marie Louise of Bourbon-Parma.
Thus, Ferdinand reckoned that his heir would follow the faith of the majority of the Bulgarian people. It was far more important for Boris to be raised as an Orthodox Christian.
The Vatican's envoy to Bulgaria, Angelo Roncalli, has returned to Sofia "to make sure that the ceremonies which will be performed in Sofia contain nothing in conflict with the wedding celebration by the royal couple in Italy," according to a report in the New York Times.
Boris' three younger siblings are Roman Catholic.
Romanovs deny Anastasia claimant

Nearly all of the surviving members of the former Russian Imperial family have signed a statement in Paris that denounces Anna Tschaichowsky, who claims to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
Those who signed the statement include Grand Duchesses Xenia and Olga, the sisters of the late Nicholas II (and Anastasia's aunts), Princes Andrew and Feodor of Russia, Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven, and other members of the late Empress Alexandra's family.
Grand Duchess Olga told a reporter that she believes that the claimant "is convinced that she is really the Grand Duchess." Olga said: "Of all my questions relating to former days, friends or other intimacies, she could not answer one."
Mrs. Tchaikowsky is currently living in the United States with Mrs. William Leeds, the former Princess Xenia of Russia.

Kaiser attends Krupp wedding

Kaiser Wilhelm II today attended the wedding of the world's richest woman, Bertha Krupp, who married Lieutenant Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach. The wedding took place in an "improvised chapel adjoining the bride's birthplace, Villa Huegel-Huegel," near Essen.

Before the wedding, the bride and groom announced they were giving $250,000 to a workmen's invalid fund. Bertha Krupp also announced that she was personally donating a further $250,000 to the same fund, and was also donating land where workers' homes would be built.
The Kaiser sat with the bride's family during the simple Lutheran service. The bride wore "a princess robe of heavy, tinted crepe de chine, with panels of point de Venise, and a four-yard train."
The veil was made from tulle and Brussels lace and was topped with a wreath of myrtle blossoms.
At the wedding reception, the Kaiser conferred on the groom the right to the surname Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach.
Wilhelm II played a major role in arranging this marriage. Bertha was the elder of two daughters of Friedrich Krupp, whose firm was one of the most important industrial firms in Germany.
Friedrich Krupp died in 1902, leaving two daughters and no male heir to take over the firm. Thus, Kaiser Wilhelm II ensured that the firm would continue when he arranged for the marriage between Bertha and Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach, a member of a prominent diplomatic family.
Bertha became the sole owner of the Krupp firm, as her younger sister received a substantial payoff. Gustav, handpicked by the Kaiser, would become the new guiding force behind Krupp.
The bride was given away by her cousin, Arthur Krupp, and she was attended by her sister, Barbara.
The newlyweds left by special train for the Krupp castle on the Rhine where they will spend their honeymoon.
Only 20-years-old, Bertha is "in so sense a beauty," but a "healthy, robust girl," whose "life has been extremely simple."
The new Mrs. Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach is said to be worth $100,000,000. Think more than a billion in modern currency.

The Palace is the archduke' Viennese residence. The only two members of the imperial family to attend the baptism were Archduke Karl Stefan, who was the infant's sponsor, and Archduke Ferdinand Karl, a younger brother of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
The infant was given the name Maximilian.

Kirill's funeral attended by peasants and Generals

Grand Duke Kirill of Russia, the head of the Romanov family, was laid to rest today after a funeral where "Russian workers in threadbare clothes rubbed shoulders with bearded generals in faded Czarist uniforms."
The coffin was draped with the Imperial flag.
More than 3000 White Russians crammed into the Russian Orthodox church outside Paris to pay their respects.
Thirty priests took part in a funeral service that took more than 3 hours. The mourners included two of Kirill's three children, Grand Duke Wladimir and the Princess of Leiningen, and his brothers, Grand Duke Andrew and Grand Duke Boris and sister, Princess Nicholas of Greece and her daughter, Princess Paul of Yugoslavia. Grand Duke Dimitri, Prince George of Greece and and the former Kaiser Wilhelm II were also present for the funeral.
Wilhelm's grandson, Prince Louis Ferdinand, is married to Kirill's younger daughter, Grand Duchess Kira.
The Grand Duke is will be buried at Coburg next to his wife, Victoria Melita.

The Pope had a long talk with the Papal Nuncio to Italy about the religious questions that have affected the marriage plans between Boris and Giovanna.
The King is Orthodox, and his bride-to-be is Roman Catholic.

King Boris has sent a thank you telegram to President Herbert Hoover: "I am deeply touched. Thank you sincerely for your heartfelt congratulations and amiable letter."
The king received President Hoover's telegram yesterday.

Hungarian Prime Minister Count Bethlen has announced that the country will soon hold a referendum on the restoration of the monarchy. The Prime Minister has announced that he does not support 16-year-old Archduke Otto, who is currently attending school in Luxembourg. Otto is the eldest son of the late Emperor Karl, who abdicated in 1918.
It is understood that the count is a "partisan supporter" of Archduke Albrecht, son of the very wealthy Archduke Friedrich. Albrecht, who is fluent in Hungarian, is also favored by Hungarians because he refused to leave the country during the "Red Terror."
However, Count Apponyi and the Legitimists favor the young Archduke Otto, who also has the support of the Hungarian House of Lords.
In his speech, Count Bethlen said: "the bond between the nation and the dynasty which was severed must be reforged. We must get all the living forces of the nation to achieve the great task of reestablishing the kingdom."

Funeral services will be held at the Russian Church in Copenhagen for Empress Marie of Russia who died yesterday at the age of 81. The former Princess Dagmar of Denmark died at her home in Copenhagen after a lengthy illness. She had never stopped believing that her son, Nicholas II and his family, were still alive, and the Romanovs would return to rule Russia. The empress' body will lie in state until the funeral.
It is expected that members of the Danish royal family will attend the funeral. It is also understand that King Haakon of Norway will attend the funeral, as well as the Duke of York, who will represent his father, King George V. Military honors will be accorded. Following the funeral, Empress Marie will be buried at Roskilde Cathedral.

King Georg of Saxony died today at Dresden. He had succeeded to the throne in June 1902, following the death of his brother, Albert.
Earlier today, the king signed a decree that would allow for his son, Crown Prince Friedrich, to act as regent during his illness.
King Georg was born in 1832. He made a grand dynastic marriage in 1859, when he married Infanta Maria Ana of Portugal. Their marriage took place in Lisbon on May 11, 1859.
The couple had two children, Mathilde, and Friedrich, who now succeeds as King.
Friedrich is married to Archduchess Louise of Austria, who caused a great scandal, when she ran off with her children's tutor.
