Prince Mirko of Bulgaria is engaged

HRH Prince Mirko of Bulgaria, who is better known by his legal name, Mirko Sajonia-Coburgo, is engaged to Marta Emid.  Spanish celebrity magazine Hola, was the first to report the engagement.  The prince's mother, Carla, confirmed the news to another Spanish magazine, Vanitatis.  She appeared surprised that Mirko and Marta were able to keep the news within the family until it was leaked a few days ago.

Mirko, 31, is the eldest of three sons of HRH Prince Kubrat of Bulgaria and Carla-Maria Royo-Villanova y Urrestarazu.  He and Marta met at the Hospital Clinico San Carlos in Madrid, where Mirko was in residency in general and digestive surgery.  Marta is also a practicing physician.  She trained at the same hospital, but her specialty is Anesthesiology and Resuscitation.

The prince studied medicine at the University of Navarra, graduating in 2019.  He worked at the Clinico San Carlos for five years, leaving in September 2025 when he accepted a position as a specialist in general and digestive surgery at the Hospital Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Madrid.

He also has a practice at the Vithas Madrid Arturo Soria University Hospital, and has passed the first two (of three) United States Medical Licensing Examinations, which would allow him to practice medicine in the United States.

 The doctor is a huge admirer of his father, Prince Kubrat, known professionally as Dr. Kubrat Sajonia-Coburg, who specializes in proctology and digestive surgery.  Mirko considers his father his greatest role model, who taught him "the importance of hard work and always caring for family and friends."

The couple began dating in late 2023.   The press first noticed the couple in April 2024, when they attended the wedding of Teresa Urquijo y Moreno and José Luis Martínez-Almeida y Navasqües, the mayor of Madrid.  The bride is the granddaughter of HRH Princess Teresa Maria Francisca Dorothea of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duchess of Salerno, and her husband, Don Iñigo Moreno y Arteaga, Marqués de Laserna.

The prince's official title is HRH Prince Mirko Panagjurištki, but in Spain he is known as Dr. Mirko Sajonia-Coburgo.  His future wife is an "exceptionally discreet woman" who works in private healthcare.

Prince Mirko is a grandson of King Simeon and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria, the former Doña Margarita Gómez-Acebo y Cejuela, and a great-grandson of King Boris III and Princess Giovanna of Italy.

The wedding is said to take place in Madrid in the summer of 2027.
