The Hereditary Prince and Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz have announced their son's name, who was born on September 23 in Rotterdam.
The infant duke has been named Georg Leopold Borwin and will be known as Leopold.
The name Georg has been used by family members since 1779 when Duke Georg Friedrich Karl Joseph was born in Hannover. He was the 8th child of Karl II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and Landgravine Friederike of Hesse-Kassel.
One of Georg's godfathers was King George III of Great Britain. The king was married to the future Grand Duke Georg's paternal aunt, Charlotte.
The name Leopold honors Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, whose decree in 1701 led to the creation of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Borwin has been used by members of the Mecklenburg family since the 12th century. Leopold's grandfather is named Duke Georg Borwin.
