It is believed, but not confirmed that Juan Carlos has accepted an invitation from a long time friend, Pepe Fanjul who owns the Casa de Campo hotel in La Romana.

The Miami-based businessman has been friends with Juan Carlos for many years.  Pepe's step-grandmother, Elizarda Sampedro, the second wife of his grandfather, Jose Genaro Ramon Gomez Mena y Vila, was the sister of Edelmira Sampedro-Ocejo y Robato, who was the first wife of Juan Carlos's uncle, Alfonso, the Count of Covadonga.

ABC also confirms that Queen Sofia will remain in Spain and continue her official role,  Most of her work centers on the Reina Sofia Foundation.  She is already at the Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca, where King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia and their two daughters,  Leonor, the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofia.

  1. Hello,
Pepe Fanjul's grandfather, José Gómez-Mena, married twice. By his first wife, Olga Seigle, he had a daughter, Lilian, his only child and Pepe Fanjul's mother. Manuel Gómez-Mena married as second wife to Elizarda Sampedro, who was Edelmira's sister. So Elizarda was actually his step-grandmother.

  2. While I haven't agreed with Sofia's social views, one has to sympathize for what she has gone through these past few years. It's hard to imagine the humiliation she must feel at this time.

  3. Spanish media reports he is in Abu Dabi. This makes more sense to me.
