Infanta Pilar, the older sister of King Juan Carlos, was admitted to the RĂºber Internacional clinic in Madrid on January 5, according to EFE, the Spanish news agency. The 83-year-old infanta as accompanied by her son Fernando Gomez-Acebo.
She has undergone treatment, including chemotherapy, for colon cancer several times. Infanta Pilar, Duchess of Badajoz, has shown great strength and fortitude, as well as a sense of humor, when handling her medical issues. Last year, she was in Mallorca when she was rushed to a Madrid hospital for emergency surgery due to an intestinal obstruction.
In October, Infanta Pilar attended the events at the Civil Guard in Palma with her daughter, Simoneta. The following month, in spite of her health, she was present that Neuvo Futuro's charity market. She has been the association's honorary president for more than 40 years.
Infanta Maria del Pilar Alfonsa Juana Victoria Luisa Ignacia y Todos los Santos de Borbon y Borbon dos Sicilias, Duchess of Badajoz, was born at Cannes on July 30, 1936, the first of four children of HRH Infante Don Juan, Count of Barcelona, third son of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Princess Maria de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
She renounced her rights to the throne in 1967 when she married Don Luis Gomez-Acebo y Duque e Estrade, Vizconde de la Torre. The marriage took place at the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon on M5, 1967.
The couple had five children, Dona Simoneta, Don Juan Filiberto, Vizconde de a Torre, Don Bruno, Don Beltran and Don Fernando Gomez-Acebo y de Borbon.
Don Luis died in 1991.
Infanta Pilar served as President of the International Equestrian Federation from 1994 until 2006, when she was succeeded by Princess Haya of Jordan. She was also a member of the International Olympic Committee from 1996 to 2006.
