At a Privy Council meeting on March 14,  Queen Elizabeth II gave her formal consent to the marriage between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

  1. I wonder if the Queen didn't recognise the marriage, Meagen would still become Princess Harry of Wales, but their children likely to be Lords and Ladies M-W ?

  2. Her name is Meghan, not Meagan. The marriage would not be valid if the queen did not approve.

The children will be Lord or Lady Christian name unless the queen issues a Letters Patent to give them the HRH and title prince or princess. The 1917 Letters Patent gives the HRH and the title of Prince or princess to the children of the sovereign, grandchildren of the sovereign in the male line and the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. Other great-grandchildren in the male line (children of younger sons) would have the rank of children of a duke (lord or lady Christian name Windsor). Prince Michael of Kent falls into this category. So does Harry at this time. So did William (which is why the queen issued the LP to give all of his kids the title because if the first born would have been a girl, she would have been the Lady Charlotte, and the first son would have been Prince George. Due to the change to the succession - first born regardless of sex -- it would have been awkward if the first born, a girl was not royal. It will be interesting to see if the queen provides the same for Harry's kids

  5. Marlene - when Charles becomes King, would not Harry and Meaghan's children (assuming they have them at that point) be raised to HRH status since Harry would then be the son of the Sovereign and his children would then be grandchildren of that Sovereign?

  6. This has not happened before with a younger grandson in the main line --unlike Prince Michael, a grandson of a younger son of the sovereign. This is a loophole because the LP does not provide for an upgrade - which may need to be fixed with another LP.
