King Michael - a statement from Karl Iohannis, President of Romania : State Funeral
Condolence message sent by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis
The President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, gladly received the news of the death of His Majesty King Michael I.
"The remarkable personality of contemporary Romania, serving its country with much commitment and responsibility, presumably reigning over the most troubled period of the twentieth century, the King always knew to be a model of behavior and attitude. By the way he acted as head of our state, through the courage and dedication he showed, Michael transformed the phrase "King and the Homeland" into one that defined his whole life.
With faith and confidence in his mission, Michael I reigned over times when democracy was put to the test and where respect for human rights was a difficult task. However, its role in the vicinity of European values is fully known today. He strongly opposed extremism in trying to save his country and people, and that is why he deserves our respect and homage.
The last head of state of a belligerent power during the Second World War and the Marshal of the Romanian Army, Mihai I, contributed decisively to the shortening of the war and the saving of hundreds of thousands of human lives. The King defended all his powers and prerogatives statehood in the most difficult times of the reign.
A historic injustice removed him from the throne and banished him from the country, but this sad event did not prevent him from exalting the Exile bitterly to the authentic values and the unswerving faith that Romania would return to the natural status of a democratic European state.
After 1989, kept away from his country and his people, the King continued to militate for the advancement of Romania. The diplomatic tours and missions for Romania's accession to NATO and the European Union show us the devotion that remained unconditionally faithful to his Nation. His inspiring model proves that for Mihai I to be in the service of the country was a profession of faith.
Through all that he has done, King Mihai put his entire life at the service of the Romanian nation and served with denial, dignity and responsibility the country in which he was born.
For these merits, the Government will organize the state funeral for Mihai I, according to his rank and merits. Thus, we will show that we are respecting our history and that we know to honor a great state man.
I also express my hope that the Romanian society and its political representatives will not let Mihai I's inheritance be lost. We still need in our public life the continuity of the actions of the Royal Family, which has proven so many times the utility and sense of duty as well as the loyalty to the fundamental interests of the Romanian state.
I send my condolences to the Royal Family.
God rest in peace! "
At the same time, the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, sent a letter of condolences to His Royal Highness Princess Margareta.
