Kaiser thanks Grand Duchess Luise of Baden for etching

December 4, 1915

Kaiser Wilhelm II has sent a telegram of thanks to Grand Duchess Luise of Baden for the "gift of an etching entitled 'Silent Heroism,'" which portrays peasant women working in the fields while their men are away at the front," according to the Associated Press.

"Your appropriate gift has just been received, for which I thank you heartily. The German woman has proved herself equal to the limit of her tasks; as pious, strong, and confident in all matters, and active in following the example set by Germany's wonderful princess.  May God bless your work.  WILHELM.

Grand Duchess Luise, 77, is the Kaiser's paternal aunt.  She was born on December 3, 1838, the second and youngest child of  German Emperor Wilhelm I and his wife, Princess Auguste of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.  Her older brother, Friedrich III, was Wilhelm II's father.

She married the future Grand Duke Friedrich of Baden in 1856.  He died in 1907.

Grand Duke Friedrich II of Baden is the Grand Duchess' eldest and only surviving son. He is married to Princess Hilda of Luxembourg.   Her only daughter, Victoria, is the consort of King Gustav V of Sweden.
