Crown Prince to Marry Duchess Cecilie

September 4, 1904

The engagement of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany to Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin was announced tonight by the Crown Prince's father, Wilhelm II reports the New York Times.

The announcement was made at a dinner hosted by Wilhelm II and his wife, Auguste Viktoria at a dinner for "leading officials of Schleswig-Holstein."

Duchess Cecilie is the sister of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.  Her sister, Alexandrine, is the wife of Prince Christian of Denmark.

The announcement of the engagement was "received with great enthusiasm."

Crown Prince Wilhelm is said to be an "amiable, modest Prince, exceedingly popular in Germany," and is one of the army's "most dashing officers."  He is a horseman with "few superiors," and on several occasions has been the "hero of daring feats that has brought upon him the official displeasure of his father."

He has a "liking for Americans," and was said to have fallen "deeply in love with Miss Gladys Deacon," which caused great concern to his parents.   His education has been "very complete,  He enjoys music, and is a "good musician," and "under the guidance of his father, he has acquired a thorough grasp of affairs of state.
