The new Spanish royal family: Elena & Cristina out

The Prince of Asturias will be proclaimed as King Felipe VI within the next two weeks, as the organic law makes its way through the Cortes.  The date could be June 18, but nothing has been announced.  Felipe will become king the moment his father signs the act of Abdication,.

The new Royal Family will consist of King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, the Princess of the Asturias, Infanta Sofia, and King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

Felipe's two older sisters, Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina, will cease to be members of the Royal Family, which means they will no longer carry out official engagements.   The two sisters will not lose their royal titles or their dynastic rights, but they will be in the same position as King Juan Carlos' two sisters, Infanta Pilar and Infanta Margarita, who are members of the King's family.)

Juan Carlos's two sisters did lose their rights when they married, and their descendants do not have succession rights to the Spanish throne.

Infanta Cristina and her four children live in Switzerland.  Infanta Elena and her two children live in Madrid.  She has continued to carry out official engagements on behalf of the royal house, but her official work will cease when her brother becomes King.

The official swearing-in ceremony will take place some time in July.  It will not be a coronation, but the crown will be on display during the installation, where the new King Felipe VI will agree to uphold the constitution.

  1. The proclamation and the swearing-in ceremony are the same one. After being sworn-in, the King is proclaimed.
So, one cannot be in June and the other one in July, because it is a single ceremony

  2. Officialy Infanta Elena will cease to be member of the royal family but personally I believe she will still carry out official engagements on behalf of the royal house. Infanta Leonor and SofĂa are 8 and 7 years old and I think the new King and Queen will need help. Infanta Elena is very popular in Spain, even many Spaniards would prefer Infanta Elena as Queen of Spain.

  4. Juanm the El Pais article states that Elena will have no official duties after her father abdicates.

  5. Everything is very confused. Today Spanish media are saying King Juan Carlos will sign the Abdication Act on 17th of June during an official ceremony at The Royal Palace of Madrid, next day , on 18th of June Prince Felipe will be proclamed King of Spain at Las Cortes, the Spanish Parliament. But there isn't official confirmation of this new.

  6. Yes I know Marlene , read that article before.
About the Te Deum, I remember in 1975 the religious ceremony was the same day or next day of the proclamation, but that was in 1975...don't know now.

  8. I do not think there will be a religious ceremony like in 1975.
And I have just heard that no foreign guests will be invited. But nothing is official yet.

  10. Of course there will be a Te Deum, it is a catholic monarchy, but we don´t know when. This has been a sudden event (to his subjects) and everything will happen during next weeks but they have time enough to invite foreign guest. In 1975 Franco died on 22 novembre and the Te Deum was on the 27, they had just one week to organize the Te Deum, now can do the same.

  11. It seems this is nothing new. My research shows that under Royal decree 2917/1981, the royal family only consists of the King, Queen, King's parents, King's children, and the Crown Prince.

  12. Marlene do you think Princess Cristina's exile will be permanent? Her husband's sketchy financial doings didn't help the popularity of the monarchy or King JC.

  13. I think it will depend on the outcome of the trial, and if she is also charged.

  14. Sadly Spanish media are saying today there won't be a Te Deum. Manuel was right, It will be a laicist proclamation, it's very sad, without Te Deum there isn't tradition !!!! and King of Spain is "The Catholic King of Spain" , a title otorgued by the Pope. I think they prefer al low profile ceremony, don' t want to spend.....

  15. if i were Infanta Elena i would have prayed that Filipe would not have become King. to keep my Royal engagement Duties, if i were Elena.
getting Married shouldn't have mattered in whether to keep her Royal Engagement duties.

  16. Marriage had nothing to do with duties. Elena is divorced. She was a member of the Royal Family until her father's abdication. She and Cristina ceased to be members of the royal family when their brother became king. They have not lost their rights of succession or their title of Infanta or their HRH. Spain does not need a large royal family
