i have a question about diana's title post-divorce. formally, they dropped the HRH but she was still given a princess-type title, known not as THE princess of wales anymore but diana, princess of wales. didn't she cease to be a princess once she divorced the prince? that's what i thought happened, but she still had princess in her formal title. any insight? and congrats on getting your article linked!
ReplyDeleteDiana was not given any titles after the divorce. She ceased to be HRH The Princess of Wales. The HRH loss was made official when the Queen issued a letters patent removed the HRH from divorced spouses. Diana could have reverted to her pre marriage title - The Lady Diana Spencer - if she wanted to do so. She was styled as are the divorced wives of peers. For example, when the duke and duchess of Roxeburghe were divorced, she became Jane, Duchess of Roxburghe. This, Diana and Sarah were following the style for former wives of peers. But if Diana remarried, she would have taken her husband's title, if he had one, or if he were a commoner, she would have become The Lady Diana last name. She would have ceased to have been styled as Diana, Princess of Wales. She returned to her previous rank with the divorce. One exception was made: if she attended any state functions, she would be accord her marital rank ... she was not invited to state events, actually
ReplyDeleteWhat if Princess Michael is divorced from her husband? Would she be Maria Christine, Princess Michael of Kent?
ReplyDeletePigs will fly before that happens. Yes, the style would be Marie Christine, Princess Michael of Kent. No HRH, no longer the rank of a princess of the UK
ReplyDeletePigs will fly, because they are so devoted? Or, because MC would never want to revert to baroness?
ReplyDeleteShe was Mrs. Troubridge at the time of the wedding. As she is a British citizen, her foreign title (which is now merely a surname) would not be recognized officially
