Princess Maria's wedding postponed

January 11, 1939

Princess Maria of Italy's wedding to Prince Luigi of Bourbon Parma, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed due to the health of the bride's older sister, Princess Mafalda.

The Associated Press is reporting that Mafalda, the wife of Prince Philipp of Hesse, has been suffering from "an attack of bronchial pneumonia which developed from influenza.  The 36-year-old princess appears to have "passed through a crisis" and her condition is improving.

Italian officials are denying "persistent reports" about her health and rumors of "her death were being kept secret" as not to interfere with the visit of Britain's Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

A new date for Maria's wedding has not been announced.
