Disappointment in Italy: another girl born to Queen Elena

November 19, 1902

Queen Elena of Italy was "accouched of a daughter this morning in Rome," reports the New York Times.  The queen, and her infant daughter are "doing well."  The new princess has been named Mafalda.

The "accouchment occurred a month earlier than expected," as King Vittorio Emanuele was shooting on Monte Cristo Island, when he was suddenly called back to Rome.

The birth of another princess is a "great public disappointment.  Had the Queen given birth to a son, he would have been proclaimed the Prince of Rome.

This is the second daughter for the king and queen.  Princess Jolanda Margherita was born at Rome on June 1, 1901.
