Viktoria Luise's love might heal ancient feud

October 5, 1912

Berlin newspapers are reporting that Princess Viktoria Luise, the only daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, has "fallen in love" with Prince Ernst August, youngest son of the Duke of Cumberland, according to the Los Angeles Times.

It is not known how the Kaiser feels about such a match has most assume that "nothing less than a throne" would be acceptable for Viktoria Luise.

It has been "strongly hinted" that a marriage might be arranged between the princess and Edward, Prince of Wales, but if the present rumor turns out to be correct, a marriage would certainly "end the ancient feud between the houses of Cumberland and Hohenzollern."  The familial dispute began in 1866, when Prussia absorbed the kingdom of Hanover.

Other reports state the Duke of Cumberland, who is married to Princess Thyra of Denmark, a younger sister of Queen Alexandra and Dowager Empress Marie of Russia, will renounce his right to the throne of Hanover, and Wilhelm II will name Ernst August as the regent for the duchy of Brunswick.
