the death of a duke
February 6, 1908
The New York Times is reporting the death today of Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg.
Ernst I was born at Hildburghausen on September 16, 1926. He was the eldest son of Duke Georg and his wife, Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
He married Princess Agnes of Anhalt Dessau on April 28, 1853. Four months later on August 3, Ernst succeeded his father as the reigning Duke of Saxe-Altenburg.
Ernst I and his wife, Agnes, had two children, Princess Marie (1854-1898) who married Prince Albrecht of Prussia, and Prince Georg who was born on February 1, 1856, and lived for one month, dying on February 29.
The throne now passes to Ernst's nephew, Ernst II, the only son of the late Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg. The new duke is married to Princess Adelheid of Saxe-Meiningen. They have four young children: Princess Charlotte Agnes, Hereditary Prince Georg Moritz, Princess Elisabeth and Prince Friedrich Ernst.
