It's a boy for Marie and Alexander
September 6, 1923
By wireless to the New York Times.
Queen Marie of Yugoslavia gave birth to a son this morning at Belgrade. The "joyful event was immediately announced by a salute of 101 guns and the pealing of the Cathedral bells."
The proud father, King Alexander, issued a proclamation declaring "the young Prince the heir to the throne." The news of the birth was "welcomed with great joy throughout the country" as it has settled the question of the succession in Yugoslavia.
Queen Marie is the second daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie of Romania. She married King Alexander at Belgrade on June 8, 1922. She is 23 years old, and her husband is 32. Her elder sister, Elizabeth, is the wife of King George II of the Hellenes.
The new Crown Prince is the "second grandchild" of the Romanian sovereigns. In October 1921, Crown Princess Helen, the wife of Crown Prince Carol, gave birth to a son, Michael.
[Note: the Yugoslav prince was the third grandchild. Crown Prince Carol also fathered a child, Mircea, by his first wife, Zizi Lambrino. The child was born after the marriage was annulled."]
