The Duke of Oporto, younger brother of the late King Carlos of Portugal, is engaged to marry Mrs. Philip van Valkenburg of New York," reports the New York Times. The Times's report is based on a dispatch to the Exchange Telegraph from Rome.
This will be the fourth marriage for Mrs. van Valkenburg. Her first marriage to an inventor, Lee Agnew, ended in divorce. She then married 73-year-old William Hayes Chapman, who died in October 1907, leaving her an estate "valued at nearly $8,000,000."
On November 23, 1909, she married Philip van Valkenburg, "a wealthy lawyer, and a member of one of the oldest Dutch families here." The couple was divorced in Putnam, Connecticut in 1914.
Before her third marriage, Mrs. van Valkenburg was courted by several different men including a Russian count, Tcherep Spiridovitch, and Count Aubert de Sonis of Paris. She was also reported engaged to marry "various titled men, including Lord Kintore.
This will be the first marriage for the 52-year-old Duke of Oporto, whose nephew, Manoel II, is the exiled king of Portugal. The Duke was once engaged to Archduchess Marie Valerie, the youngest daughter of the late Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph but she did not want to the duke.
Seeking what exactly was the bride's name, all records I'm finding are Mrs. William Hayes Chapman.
ReplyDeleteAny royal genealogy that includes Portugal - she was Nevada Stoody Hayes (1885-1941), daughter of Jacob Walter Stoody and Nancy Miranda McNeil
