April 5, 1931
The wedding between Prince Gottfried zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Princess Margarita of Greece will take place "in the celebrated, picturesque family castle of Langenburg on April 20," according to a report in the Chicago Daily Tribune.
Prince Gottfried "has many American friends on both sides of the Atlantic," and he accompanied his aunt, Queen Marie of Roumaia, to the United States five years ago. The announcement of his engagement to Princess Margarita "definitely settles the rumors of his engagement to Mrs. Reginald Vanderbilt."
For several years, it has been suggested that he "would make a match with the former Gloria Morgan," but it was always denied by Mrs. Vanderbilt's parents. This was despite the fact that Prince Gottfried and Mrs. Vanderbilt "were constantly seen together." Only "three weeks ago," American newspapers published Gloria Vanderbilt's picture as "the future bride of this German prince."
Queen Marie and her sister, Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia will both be attending the wedding. Marie recently arrived in Paris and is now on her way to Dinard to visit her sister, before leaving for Langenburg.
Prince Gottfried is the eldest son of Marie's second sister, Prince Alexandra, and her husband, the Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. The youngest sister, Princess Beatrice, is married to Infante Alfonso of Orleans-Borbon, Duke of Galliera.
Hello, did Prince Philip attend the weddings of all his sisters in 1930/31? I know he did not attend Princess Sophie's to Prince George of Hanover in 1946 due to the war which nad just ended. Did ant british royals or Mountbattens attend the 1930s weddings? I understand that Princess Andrew did not attend any of them dur to the state of her mental health. Thanks
ReplyDeleteYes, Philip did attend the weddings of the three elder sisters. Gottfried's mother was born as a member of the British royal family, but there were no close ties to her cousins in 1931
ReplyDeleteHello Marlene! I am lookinf for informations about Gottfried, because I read in some newspapers that he participated in the plot against Hitler in 1944, july. However, no "serious" book (like "Royals and the Reich") corroborate that. Moreover, Hugo Vicker's "Alice Princess Andrew of Greece" does not mention what the prince did during Second World War... Do you have any information about that? Do you know if there are articles about Gottfried or his wife Margarita? Thanks a lot for your answer. Regards
