Princess Caroline and Prince Albert of Monaco arrived by plane today "for their first visit to the United States," reports the Associated Press.
The four-year-old princess and three-year-old prince were accompanied by their mother, Princess Grace, the former actress Grace Kelly.
The family arrived in New York, and are expected to go to Philadelphia tomorrow or Friday to visit Princess Grace's family, Prince Rainier is expected to join them in a few days.
It's amazing to think how rare transatlantic travel was, even for the wealthy, only fifty years ago. It is hard to imagine today that a Philadelphia-born European princess would wait until until her first child were four years old to take her back to see her American family. I don't think Crown Princess Mary waited nearly that long before take Prince Christian and Princess Isabella to Australia. In 1961, though, it wasn't odd at all.
