Grand Duchess Ella buried in Jerusalem

February 2, 1921

The bodies of Grand Duchess Elisabeth of Russia and her maid "have been privately buried in a crypt in the Church of St. Mary Magdalen in Gethsemane," reports the New York Times. The Greek Patriarch and the Bishop officiated at the ceremony.

The church was built by the mother of Grand Duke Serge of Russia, who married the former Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and By Rhine, and was dedicated by the Grand Duke and his wife.

The Grand Duchess was the older sister of Empress Alexandra, wife of Nicholas II.
