Patricia's betrothal denied

October 7, 1906

An "emphatic official denial" of the reported engagement between Princess Patricia of Connaught and Grand Duke Michael of Russia was issued today in London.

The Chicago Daily Tribune noted, however, that "the same kind of denial was made when the story of the betrothal of Princess Ena of Battenberg and King Alfonso of Spain was first printed.
Many still believe that the story of Princess Patricia's engagement to Grand Duke Michael, younger brother of Nicholas II, is "true and that it will be admitted after certain diplomatic negotiations are completed."

A formal denial of the engagement has also been issued in St. Petersburg.

An "unwitting error was committed by announcing through semi-official news agencies" and was, unfortunately, accepted "as fact in court and diplomatic circles."  It now appears, according to sources in St. Petersburg that the discussion of an alliance has not actually reached "the stage of an actual betrothal.
