King Manoel safe

October 6, 1910

King Manoel of Portugal "is now under British protection," reports the New York Times.   The young king, forced to flee his country after a republic was established, was on board the royal yacht, Amelie, when it entered Gibraltar's harbor at 11 p.m.   The Queen Mother Amelie, the Dowager Queen Maria Pia and the Duke of Oporto, were also on board the yacht.
Shortly after the yacht docked, the King and his mother came ashore and were driven to the summer residence of the Governor General, Sir Frederick Forestier-Walker.  The Royal party and the the yacht's crew appear to have been "brought together hurriedly," judging by their appearance.
