The Roumanian royal family's affairs "have become so complicated" that Prince Friedrich of Hohenzollern, the head of the Catholic branch of the house of Hohenzollerns, and a branch of the Roumanian royal house, "is to be called upon to adjudicated in the many disputes between Queen Dowager Marie and her children," according to the New York Times.

In the last few days, Queen Marie has had a "series of interviews" with the Roumanian premier Maniu, Nicolas Titulescu and Patriarch Christea, one of the three Regents, regarding the issues facing her family. Yesterday, the queen appeared to be in a "state of agitation," with "tears streaming down her face." She announced that she would leave on Friday for Oberammergau, Germany, but it was "learned semi-officially" that she plans to go to Sigmaringen to visit the Prince of Hohenzollern. it is understood that former Crown Prince Carol and his younger brother, Nicholas, who is a member of young King Michael's regency may also be present.

Prince Nicholas also plans to visit Paris next week, where he will meet his older brother.

Princess Helen, Carol's former wife, and the mother of young king Michael, will leave shortly for a trip to Frankfurt to celebrate the birthday of her mother, Queen Sophie. Princess Ileana remains in Cairo, and her return to Roumania has been postponed until after June 18.

The "affairs of Prince Carol, the brief engagement of Princess Ileana and the notoriety earned by Prince Nicholas by assaulting motorists who get in the way of his speeding car," have all been seen as "Roumanian royal sensations."

Earlier this year, Princess Ileana became engaged to Count Alexander von Hochberg. The engagement was announced as a love match, but after "accusations of scandalous conduct in earlier years were made against" the Count, the engagement was broken. At first, Ileana "refused" to accept the break, but eventually, after a discussion with her mother, she understood the reasons why the marriage could not take place.

  1. This was a fascinatingly dysfunctional family! I could read about them constantly, thank goodness we have Royal Musings and all the interesting articles about them.
