Alexandra first dowager since 1837

Queen Alexandra, the widow of King Edward VII who died yesterday, becomes first Queen Dowager since the death in 1837 of William IV, who was survived by his wife, Queen Adelaide, reports the Chicago Daily Tribune.

Adelaide, who was born a Princess of Saxe-Meiningen, lived until December 1849.

Queen Alexandra was born in December 1844 as Princess Alexandra of Denmark, the eldest daughter of the late King Christian IX.

As the dowager queen, she will receive an annual annuity of $350,000 for "her maintenance."
