German Emperor Friedrich III has agreed to his daughter, Victoria's marriage to Prince Alexander of Battenberg. The Emperor's decision will lead, according to German news accounts (and reported by the New York Times, "to an immediate disturbance of the relations between Germany and Russia." It would be difficult for the German Chancellor, Prince Bismarck, in "view of his attitude toward Russia," to conduct official business if Prince Alexander marries Princess Victoria, and became a member of the imperial house.
The news of the "proposed betrothal" has led to Prince Bismarck explaining his "views frankly and openly and requesting permission to resign "in the event of the Emperor's approving the alliance."
The crisis between Friedrich and Bismarck will continue. It has been stated that Friedrich will confer upon Alexander the title of Fürst as proof that Alexander has renounced his candidature for the Bulgarian throne. This action will remove all scruples for the forthcoming marriage between Alexander and Victoria.
Prince Bismarck has also "protested this course."
According to views by well-informed circles as to "whether the differences" between Friedrich and Bismarck, "can be arranged." It is not only the proposed marriage that has caused tension but also "internal policies."
Prince Bismarck will be visiting his estates, and the Emperor, who is said to be unwell, "slept last night without interruption. His condition is improved."
