Marie Adelaide refuses to wed Prussian prince

March 8, 1918

Several citizens of Luxembourg, including two judges, have arrived in Zurich, Switzerland, with the news that Grand Duchess Marie Adelaide of Luxembourg has refused to "accept a Prussian Prince as a husband," and this refusal has caused the "greatest irritation in Berlin circles," reports the New York Times. Nearly "every three months a new Prince is sent down to Luxembourg," and the Grand Duchess must receive him.
Marie Adelaide, 24, is the "most beautiful of six beautiful sisters." She succeeded her father in 1912. Two weeks after the Germany army invaded the tiny grand duchy, it is said that Kaiser Wilhelm II "called to pay his respects, but Marie Adelaide refused to receive him.
