Gala for Ingrid and Frederik's wedding
Marlene A Eilers Koenig Collection
Now this is a grand gathering of royals for the wedding of Princess Ingrid of Sweden and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 1935
Is that the German Crown Prince sitting on Crown Princess Cecile's left? I expected to see Louis Mountbatten prominently displaying himself somewhere! He always seems to be in any royal gathering! I see his sister Queen Louise of Sweden and the King of Sweden on the right of the photo.
Not the Crown Prince. Mountbatten was Lord Louis Mountbatten at the time - and had no connection to the Danes. He would have attended, perhaps, events in Sweden.
Marlene, I think the German Crown Prince is standing to the right and below the tall man in the dark suit in the centre of the back row. Am I right? He and Cecile would have separated by this wouldn't they?
Marlene, wouldn't Mountbatten have been a cousin to the bride? Her mother Princess Margaret of Connaught, Queen of Sweden, would have been a first cousin to his mother, Victoria Mountbatten wouldn't she? Also, there doesn't appear to be any of the British royals present - they would be cousins to the Danish royals wouldn't they?
Being a second cousin to the bride does not mean you are a close relative. In the 1930s, Lord Louis (as he was not the earl) was involved in his naval career. His sister was the Crown Princess of Sweden, but that would not give him an invite to a Danish royal wedding.
The Crown Prince is in the photo, but not sitting next to Cecilie.
The British represenatives to the wedding were Prince and Princess Arthur of Connaught and Lady Patricia Ramsay. Prince Arthur and Lady Patricia were the uncle and aunt, respectively, to the bride.
Princess Helena Victoria (United Kingdom) was also there. She is standing behind Princess Ingrid. She became quite close to the bereaved family of Crown Prince Gustav Adolf (Ingrid's father)after the death of the his first wife Crown Princess Margarethe (Princess Margaret of Connaught)in May 1920. Princess Helena Victoria was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria

ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely group card. I got a copy of it several years ago, blew it up in a scanner and worked on getting all the names...it was fun to do!
