Danish king's brother has died

June 1, 1903

The Court of Denmark has gone into mourning due to the death of Prince Julius of Schleswig-Holstein, the younger brother of King Christian IX of Denmark. Prince Julius died tonight at Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holsten. He was born at Gottorp in 1824, and was the eighth child of Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Luise of Hesse-Cassel.
In 1883, Prince Julius, who was six years younger than his brother, King Christian, contracted a morganatic marriage with Elisabeth von Ziegesar, who was created Countess von Roest by the Danish king. The Countess died at the age of 31 in 1887.
Prince Julius did not have any children. He is survived by two brothers, King Christian IX of Denmark and Prince Johann of Schlewswig-Holstein, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Duke Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Queen Alexandra of Great Britain, the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia, King George I of the Hellenes, and the Duchess of Cumberland.
