Queen Maria Theresa of Bavaria dead

February 4, 1919

According to a dispatch sent from Munich, former Queen Maria Theresa of Bavaria died last night at Chateau Wildenhart. Maria Theresa was born in 1849, as an archduchess of Austria, and Princess of Tuscany. She married the future King Ludwig in 1868. She was "a very masterful woman, and she was credited with having been the real ruler of Bavaria," according to the New York Times. She was also responsible for the "deposition of a few years ago of crazy King Otto," which meant a change to the Bavarian constitution, that allowed for her husband to be named as King of Bavaria. Ludwig had previously rejected the crown, and "had declared his intention of consenting himself with the regency."
