Death of Duke of Chartres, Civil war vet

December 5, 1910

The Duke of Chartres died today in Paris. He was 70-years-old.
Prince Robert-Philippe-Louis-Eugene-Ferdinand of Orleans was the son of the late Duke of Orleans and, thus, a grandson of King Louis-Philippe.
Although born in Paris in 1840, the prince spent much of his youth in exile. He grew up in Eisenach, Germany, and in England, where the French royal family spent a part of their exile. In 1859, the prince served with the Italian army, and also later joined the Federal Army during the first campaign of the American civil war. Following the revolution in 1870, the Duke returned to France to serve incognito in General Chanzy's army. He was married to Princess Marie-Amelie of Orleans, the daughter of the Prince of Joinville. They had two sons and two daughters, including Prince Henri of Orleans, the noted explorer.
