Boris gets raise

December 2, 1928

King Boris of Bulgaria got a raise today, bringing his salary to $43,000 per year. This is a 50% increase, and the third raise in ten years, which the popular ruler has received. The Bulgarian people are "well satisfied with his services."
Despite this increase, Boris remains "a relatively poor sovereign." King Zogu of Albania receives six times what Boris gets, and the child King Michael of Roummania's stipend is ten times more than Boris'
King Boris donates one half of his salary to charity. Recently, he gave two months of his salary to victims of a recent earthquake in Bulgaria, and he gave another two months salary to help the poor pay for fuel in the winter.
Because he has so little money himself, he cannot think of getting married, according to friends. The king also has no personal fortune, He was left $2,000,000 by his grandmother, Princess Clementine of Orleans, but the bequest was sequestered under the alien property law in England. The king is hopeful that the allied nations, following the example of the United States, will return to him his property that was confiscated under the law.
