The Marquise de Fontenoy reports today that Prince Pedro of Orleans-Braganza, eldest son of the former Crown Princess of Brazil, has "abandoned his pretentions to sovereignity of Brazil" by marrying Bohemian countess Elizabeth Dobrenzsky. The marriage is a mesalliance, according to the "monarchial view." Prince Peter's bride will never be accepted as royal by the nobility in Europe or in Brazil.
The new heir to the throne is Peter's younger brother, Louis, who is described as the more "dashing and popular" of Isabel's sons. He was married earlier this year in Cannes to the daughter of the Count of Caserta.
THis is again one of the marriage in an Royal Hosue which led to a split in the family and a dispute over the headship of the House.
ReplyDeletePrince Pedro signed a renouciation but later stated that he was aware that this is not legal and his son claimed to be head of the House. The Imperial Princess and her husband, the Count d' Eu did not want a non-royal marriage for their eldest son. Soem claim that they use that as a prextext to oust their heir from the inheritance as they prefered their second son Louis.
Whatever the truth is, I always find it sad and not honorable that one signs renounciation/abdication in order to get what one wants (marriage, throne) and later on claims it is illegal as soon as one has got what one wanted. Even worse when the offspring do that.
In any case Pricne and Princess Pedro were quite accepted and their daughter Isabelle became the Comtesse de Paris.
BTW: it is not the Duke de Caserta but the Count of Caserta. But the reports are not always very accurate... well as long as one knows about whom one is talking ..-)
Prince Pedro de Alcântara Luís Filipe Maria Gastão Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga of Orléans and Braganza, having maturely reflected, have resolved to renounce the right that, by the Constitution of the Empire of Brazil, promulgated on March 25, 1824, accords to me the Crown of that nation. I declare, therefore, that by my free and spontaneous will I hereby renounce, in my own name, as well as for any and all of my descendants, to all and any rights that the aforesaid Constitution confers upon us to the Brazilian Crown and Throne, which shall pass to the lines which follow mine, conforming to the order of succssion as established by article 117. Before God I promise, for myself and my descendants, to hold to the present declaration.
