Although considered as a possible bride for Prince Joachim of Prussia in 1913, Princess Elisabeth of Urach did not marry until 1921, when she wed Prince Karl of Liechtenstein, who was 14 years her senior.
The wedding did not take place for two reasons. The first was religion. Princess Elisabeth was Roman Catholic, and Prince Joachim was Lutheran.
There could be no compromise as the Kaiser would never have permitted his grandchildren to be raised Roman Catholic.
But the real issue was the bride's status. The Urachs were a morganatic branch of the Württemberg royal family, and, thus, Elisabeth was considered unequal to Prince Joachim.
